Residents in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina were cleaning up Saturday after storms and even a few tornadoes tore through the mid-Atlantic Friday afternoon and evening.
In Maryland, trees toppled onto homes and flash flooding disrupted traffic. Some 26,000 customers lost power at the height of the storms, WBAL-TV reported.
Four people were hurt and several buildings damaged in Harford County, the NBC affiliate added.
A tornado or funnel cloud touched down near Centreville, damaging homes.
In Virginia, downtown Hampton saw extensive damage from a tornado that started in Portsmouth, NBC affiliate WAVY-TV reported. Boats at the Hampton Yacht Club were lifted out of trailers and turned sideways. Trees were downed in several neighborhoods.
In Washington, D.C., some 11,000 utility customers had lost power Friday evening, as had 5,000 in neighboring Prince George's County, Md.
Three teens in Prince George's who were swept away by flood waters were saved by rescuers, NBC Washington reported.
Airports in Washington and Baltimore saw major disruptions starting late Friday afternoon.
The Orange Line commuter train was suspended when a tree fell on the tracks during rush hour, NBC Washington added.
In North Carolina, witnesses said they saw a tornado touch down a few miles outside Elizabeth City Friday. No damage was reported.
Another tornado was reported in Westmoreland County, Pa., damaging property.
The Storm Prediction Center listed several dozen reports of severe wind and hail by early Friday evening, some of which downed trees or caused light property damage.
