NCAA Vs NFL: Who's Got The Better Cheerleaders?

Photos: Wesley Hitt/Getty Images, Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

In our ongoing quest to determine the superior brand of football, college or pro, we've already found that the NCAA has better mascots than the NFL. Today we turn our attention to those who always steal our attention--cheerleaders--and answer a question that has vexed mankind since the start of Internet: amateur or pro?

NCAA Cheerleaders

The big difference between collegiate cheerleaders and their professional sister-en is age. These ladies are a few years younger and whether that's a good thing or bad thing is left to you. Honestly, it's hard for us to find a difference between 19-year-olds and 24-year-olds, except that the more mature are often, well, more mature. But that can work in the favor of the fresh-faced coeds, who've really got that innocent thing working for them.

Verdict
: These girls are clearly gorgeous, but who's that just out of the frame? A chubby guy who looks deceptively buff in his cheerleader uniform? That's a buzzkill.

NFL Cheerleaders

Photos: Justin Edmonds/Getty Images

If college football cheerleaders are the innocent girls next door, NFL cheerleaders are their sultry older sisters. Remember, these women were once in college too. Now they're older and they're smarter and they're better. Largely because they're women, not girls. And unless you're casting a Disney show, women are always better than girls. Plus, the NFL has something college will never have: The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. They're like the Dallas Cowboys of cheerleading!

Verdict: Older (as in, like mid-20s) is better.

The Victor: NFL cheerleaders are older, wiser and sexier. If they're lucky, NCAA cheerleaders might one day get to be one of them. In this battle of amateur versus pro, the professionals win.

The Linkam FTIR600 Stage Is Used In Combination With FTIR Spectroscopy To Image Large And Multi-Phase Samples And Monitor Fast Dynamic Processes At The University Of Rome Tre

Linkam FTIR600 Stage

Market leaders in temperature controlled microscopy, Linkam Scientific Instruments report on the use of their FTIR600 stage at the University of Rome Tre to visualise and measure the in-situ dehydration of silicate materials.

Geologists are interested in the distribution of volatile constituents across mineral crystals as this can provide insight into the crystallization process. This is now possible to investigate using modern FTIR imaging capabilities. On the Earth's crust, water bearing minerals are common. How these minerals dehydrate is important as this can give clues about dehydration-induced earthquakes and phase transformations at non-ambient conditions.

At the University of Rome Tre, Professor Giancarlo Della Ventura and his colleagues are using the Linkam FTIR600 stage to look at dehydration and absorption characteristics of water in various minerals. The team has demonstrated the ability to monitor the distribution of an absorber vs. time across various samples. Dehydration curves can be obtained by collecting single-spot data in situ. The band intensity of H20/OH absorption is measured at each step during the heating process and plotted against the in situ data. Professor Della Ventura said the greatest benefit of using a Linkam stage is the "possibility to perform experiments in situ, i.e. during the thermal treatment simulation."

Previously, fluid inclusions in minerals as small as 1-2?m wide have been studied using Raman spectroscopy as this had the capability to measure them. With the increased availability of synchrotron-radiation FTIR facilities and the development of FTIR imaging techniques under synchrotron and conventional light, FTIR can now be used to study these samples. FTIR spectroscopy is a very powerful tool for the high-temperature studies of volatile species. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy can be used to obtain an infrared spectrum of the absorption of a liquid, solid or gas. This infrared collection of data can be over a wide spectral range, making the FTIR an important tool in the study of minerals.

Leucite is a rock forming potassium and aluminium tectosilicate mineral with ideal composition K[AlSi2O6]. For leucite to be present, the rock must be low in silica as leucite will react with it to form feldspar. The Tre group studied the mechanism of dehydration in leucite samples from the Alban Hills and Vico volcanoes, Italy. In the first experiments, the crystal fragment was heated at 5?Cmin-1. Focal Plane Array (FPA) images were?taken at 100?C intervals, using a 15x objective of the ~250x250?m2of a 190?m thick crystal fragment. By illuminating a ~170x170?m2 area of the crystal, they were able to enhance the contrast of the water band at the edge of the crystal. During the experiment, the sample dehydrates smoothly, and at 400?C, it is almost anhydrous. In a second experiment, a second crystal is heated more quickly at 50?Cmin-1 to 300?C. When the sample reaches 300?C it has lost nearly 50% of its water. At 300?C, images were taken at intervals and show the slow dehydration and after 150 min, the sample is nearly anhydrous.?

This technique has been shown to provide unique opportunities to study phenomena occurring in isotropic and anisotropic materials. The use of FTIR allows for the study of areas a few ?m thick and high resolution images in a very short time provides new means to study in situ, fast dynamic phenomena under non-ambient conditions. Thermal treatments, dehydration processes and many other non-equilibrium processes can now be more extensively studied in many interesting geological systems.

5 Traits Of Successful People

Successful people are enviable, but they were not born as successes - they worked hard at being so.

It takes a lot of determination to go after your dreams and be triumphant in the end, but successful people are those who know the value of the journey, and the lessons along the way - more than the destination. They are aware that it's never easy, but they go on.

Success, per se, means different things for different people. To many, it means being able to examine yourself and be proud of what you'd become.

What are successful people made of? Is there a formula for success? Below are 5 traits common to successful people.

They have clearly defined goals. Successful people know what they want. They write it down, think of a plan to reach those goals, and align their actions and decisions towards it fulfilment. They don't just dream about accomplishing it - they take action and work hard until they get it. Successful people are not just dreamers; they are doers - which are probably the most important trait all successful
people have.

They take responsibility for all their actions and decisions. Successful people know that it's very easy to make mistakes, but what makes them a cut above the rest is that they own up to every mistake - not blaming others or making excuses. They know that every situation they are in is a result of their choices and decisions. To emulate a true success, recognize that you alone are the master of your destiny. Whatever success or failure you encounter is a product of your own actions; and every aspect of your life is your responsibility. Stop making excuses, quit the blame game and own up to everything - it takes guts to do it, but as they say, no guts, no glory.

They are persistent. Successful people do not give up without a fight - they take true determined action towards the accomplishment of their goals. They are not known to start on a task, and quit when things get tough. If all people gave up once they encounter problems, then there will be no successful people ever. Remember, true successes see obstacles as opportunities, and mistakes as lessons. Failure does not faze them - in fact, it motivates them to try harder or think of better ways to tackle the task at hand.

They are excellent at time management. Successful people do not necessarily do things hurriedly, but they do know how to make wise use of their time. Life isn't a contest on who does things faster, but rather, it's a test on who does more quality work with the time they are given. Remember, if it takes too long for a person to complete a task, he ends up accomplishing less than his full potential. Not only that - the longer you take to finish something, then the higher the possibility of your interest waning, and your determination decreasing. One of the most important strategies for using your time wisely is to drastically reduce the time you waste. Stop devoting your attention on things that don't matter, and start using your time for things that bring you closer to success.

They get up after a fall. Successful people are quite good at overcoming failure. They do not easily get discouraged when faced with defeat. They take risks, but fully recognize the possibility of failing that comes with taking risks. In order to be successful, never be afraid of criticism or taking hits on your self-confidence. In the journey towards success, there will always be those who will tell you that you can't. Don't let these people and circumstances rob you of your self-esteem - get up and prove them wrong! And even when things do not go exactly as you want, you have to realize that you always have a second chance to redeem yourself and finally achieve success. If you have clear weaknesses, simply realign your strategies to work around these weaknesses. Successful people make the most of what they're given and don't let minor (or sometimes even major) obstacles to make them lose their focus.

With all of these, one thing becomes clear - success is not easy. It takes pure determination to reach it. In life, always remember, quitters never win.

Gender bias in leading scientific journals

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Fewer women than men are asked to write in the leading scientific journals. That is established by two researchers from Lund University in Sweden, who criticise the gender bias.

In the 30 August issue of Nature, researchers have published an article showing that a much lower percentage of women than men are invited to write articles in News & Views in Nature and Perspectives in Science.

"We believe that fewer women than men are offered the career boost of invitation-only authorship in each of the two leading science journals," says Daniel Conley, a researcher at Lund University.

The consequences are that women are not as visible as men and are not provided the same opportunities for career advancement. The loss of women in science constitutes a brain drain for society.

When Nature was criticized in 2005 for offering too few women the opportunity to write for the Insight section, Nature increased the proportion of women authors.

"Gender parity can be achieved if Nature and Science are willing to make the effort to include more women in their invitation-only sections" says Johanna Stadmark, also from Lund University.

Conley and Stadmark conclude that equality within scientific research has increased in recent decades and that women today in many ways have the same opportunities as men to work within this field. However, they still believe that there is more to be done.

"Examination of the proportion of men and women who are invited to participate in all areas of science, whether it is as an invited speaker, a workshop participant, or for Science and Nature, is only good scientific practice" adds Daniel Conley.

The WTX gene is mutated in approximately 30 percent of Wilms tumors, a pediatric kidney cancer. Like many genes, WTX is part of a family. In this case, WTX has two related siblings, FAM123A and FAM123C. While cancer researchers are learning more of WTX and how its loss contributes to cancer formation, virtually nothing is known of FAM123C or FAM123A, the latter of which is a highly abundant protein within neurons, cells that receive and send messages from the body to the brain and back to the body.

A UNC-led team of scientists used sophisticated technologies to identify and describe the protein interactions that distinguish each member of the WTX family. They found that unlike WTX and FAM123C, FAM123A interacts with a specific set of proteins that regulates cell adhesion and migration, processes essential to normal cell functioning and which, when mutated, contribute to human diseases such as cancer or Alzheimer's.

The report is the first to associate a member of the WTX gene family with cell adhesion and migration. Ben Major, PhD, and his research team believe that because FAM123A is so highly expressed in neurons, their findings raise the possibility that FAM123A controls neuron migration and neuronal activity, both of which play critical roles in development, neuro-degeneration and learning. Dr. Major, study senior author, is an assistant professor of cell biology and physiology in the UNC School of Medicine and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Their report appears in the September 4, 2012 online edition of Science Signaling.

The specific set of proteins the scientists discovered within the FAM123A complex are known microtubules-associated proteins. Microtubules, one component of a cell's cytoskeleton, are rigid hollow rods approximately 25 nm in diameter, about 3000 times thinner than a human hair. Microtubules are dynamic structures that undergo continual assembly and disassembly within the cell. They function both to determine cell shape and to control a variety of cell movements, including some forms of cell locomotion.

Dr. Major explains, "Since FAM123A and WTX are closely related proteins, anything we learn about FAM123A helps us know more about WTX, the tumor suppressor gene lost in pediatric kidney cancer. Unlike WTX, FAM123A binds to a specific set of proteins that are famous for regulating microtubules, a critical component within the cell's cytoskeleton or cellular 'scaffolding.' It's important to understand how different cellular cytoskeletal networks communicate and coordinate with each other. This communication is required for normal development and life.

"When the cytoskeleton is not functioning properly, a myriad of diseases arise, including certain cancers and cancer metastases. In cancer, cells can't move to new areas of the body without being able to squeeze between and crawl around surrounding cells and tissues, which ultimately allows the cell to move away from the primary tumor. Such movement requires complicated and intricate coordination between the cytoskeleton and the rest of the cell. Our work shows that FAM123A is critical for this communication."

Dr. Major and his research team use a powerful new technology to study protein complexes. He says, "Proteins never work alone, rather they bind each other to collectively carry out a specific task. An important challenge in cancer research today is determining which of the more than 30,000 proteins in a cell come together to form complexes." Dr. Major and colleagues can purify a specific protein from cancer cells and then, using sophisticated technologies called mass spectrometry, they identify the associated proteins.

How Bain Capital execs lower their taxes - The Term Sheet ...

FORTUNE -- There has been lots of talk over the past few days about how Bain Capital executives have used management fee waivers?to effectively lower their tax payments (a tactic that is not unique to Bain). Some academics have argued that such waivers are an illegal dodge, while private equity tax attorneys I've spoken with call it "aggressive but accepted by the IRS."

Here is the basic structure: Bain officially charges 2% management fees to investors in its private equity funds. The idea is to cover overhead, such as salaries, office leases, electric bills, etc. ?But Bain has lots of other business lines (venture capital funds, hedge funds, etc.) that generate sufficient cash flow, so it "waives" the PE fund management fees. Well, sort of. Limited partners still pay the 2%, only it flows directly into the fund, as part of Bain's general partner commitment (which is between 10% and 15% of Bain's total PE fund capital, an unusually high percentage).

By doing so, Bain partners don't pay ordinary income taxes on their management fees. Instead, they pay at capital gains rates if/when the deals generate profit (because it's now considered carried interest). It appears that the partners irrevocably waive their rights to the returns if the deal returns less than par, although I don't have access to the LPAs that would spell it out more exactly. That said, sources do tell me that Bain partners cannot take waiver-related capital loss on failed transactions.

Sources sympathetic to such structures cite an IRS ruling (93-27) that specifically seems to allow such waivers, under a notion of partnership risk. Critics say that rule is being perverted, because the risk of loss is so low.

I'm not well-versed enough in IRS minutia to render legal judgment, but do feel that such structures should be banned going forward. Management fees are a fee for service. As such, they should be taxed as ordinary income. If Bain wants to eliminate management fees altogether, then move to a 0-and-32 structure.

To be sure, I have no problem with fund managers pushing some of their fees into funds. I think it's a good thing, as it's a tighter alignment of interests. But I don't see why their capital should be cheaper than that of the high-net-worth investors in their funds (who paid taxes on their pre-commitment monies). Doing so, in fact, depresses that alignment.

Tax law is a funny thing, because certain?strategies aren't black and white. They're subject to interpretation. When I asked a PE tax attorney if what Bain is doing is allowed, she told me that "allowed" and "not allowed" isn't always the right way to think about it. Okay, understood. But some things are explicitly permitted (treating carried interest as capital gains, for example) and other things are explicitly prohibited (taking deductions for work expenses for which I was reimbursed). So let's just add this one to the latter list.

Amazon Publishing inks deal with Ingram, opens ebook distribution to rivals

Amazon Publishing is continuing to broaden its distribution channels, as the New York-based imprint has formed a partnership with Ingram Content Group that will make the company's e-books available to competitors such as Apple, Barnes & Noble and Kobo. As you may be aware, there's some uneasy tension between the rivals, as Barnes & Noble has previously removed Amazon's print editions from its retail shelves in response to the company's former e-book exclusivity in the Kindle Store. It remains unknown whether any of the competitors will indeed choose to sell Amazon's content in electronic form. It's also worth pointing out that because deal applies only to Amazon Publishing's New York-based imprint, the company's west coast division is excluded from the distribution deal. Regardless of how things shake out, it's encouraging to see Amazon extend the olive branch -- now let's hope the competition reciprocates.

Caregivers in Downers Grove, IL: Cost of ... - Home Care Chicago

Almost 10 million adult children over the age of 50 are now caring for their aging parents. This number has tripled over the past 15 years. The demand will continue to increase as baby boomers age.

Although the percentage of women in the work force has also increased dramatically, particularly in women over the age of 55, the mean household income has leveled off. The economic burden of caring for elderly family members continues to increase.

Women tend to function more as a basic caregiver, while sons tend to provide more financial support. The total amount of lost wages, pensions and Social Security for these adult children is close to $3 trillion dollars nationally.

Women tend to leave the labor force earlier, so the total individual lost wages due to caregiving responsibilities equals $142,693, with an estimate of $50,000 loss on their pension. Coupled with the loss of Social Security, the lost wages for a woman totals $324,044.

The total amount of wages lost for men equals $89,107. Add Social Security and their pension and the total for men equals $283,716. The long term financial impact for those that leave their jobs early can jeopardize their financial security. There may be less money available to help children with college, weddings or even owning their own homes.

Caregiving duties vary greatly depending on the quality of care necessary. Some people need basic care, which means meeting the activities of daily living, such as bathing or dressing. This type of care is considered more intense than activities like grocery shopping or handling the finances.

When adult children must provide the additional support of errands, chores and managing the finances, time that adult has for their own leisure and personal time diminishes. Therefore, chronic illness and depression are more common. There may be less time available to spend with the grandchildren also.

An adult child caregiver over 50 years of age is more prone to have fair to poor health than an adult child who is not a caregiver. Several studies have discovered that stress, time away from friends and family, lost time at work, increased medication use, overindulgence in alcohol or prescription drugs, coronary artery disease and depression are negative impacts connected to family caregiving.

The decision to quit a job, drop back to part time or take a lower paying job for flexibility needs serious consideration. In addition, family caregivers should be careful to maintain their own health through regular check-ups and preventative services.

Ease the burden of family caregiving by hiring a reputable home care agency to help with all of your aging loved one?s needs.

Go retro with these cool tech items | Pocketchange Shopping Advice ...

retro wall phone, denon turntables

Retro styled gadgets are slowly but steadily making a comeback. The old school look and design is something that people don?t want to give up. Here are a couple of gadgets which have that retro look in them.

Home phones are slowly but steadily looking more like cell phones with their digital displays and futuristic functions. But if you want that old school look then you should get yourself a retro wall phone. Among the retro styled wall phones available the ones from Scitec are pretty cool. The Scitec Telematrix Retro Wall phone is a stylish wall phones based on the 1930?s look. This wall phone is perfect if you are trying to recreate that retro look in your living room. It has the Circa 1930 design with a few modern touches.

It also features the authentic bell ringer which phones back then had. In addition to the classic look and feel it also has modern features such as a HAC 8 step volume control to give you that added convenience. This vintage phone is great to have if you are looking to recreate that retro look in your living room.

If you want a more polished looking retro styled phone the Crosley vintage styled wall phone would be your best option. This phone comes in red and brushed chrome. The vintage rotary?dial will feel nostalgic for those who lived during those times. It also features things like flash and redial, tone and pulse switch, ringer volume on/off switch, earpiece volume control making it convenient to use during these modern times.

A record player is another retro gadget which would be quite useful as most of us have a lot of vinyl records from the past. The Denon turntables are probably the most easy to use simplistic record players around. In addition to its simple design it features great build quality. It features a heavy base construction to reduce vibrations.

This record player has the automatic startup feature which allows the turntable to begin play with the touch of a button. Once play has been completed the tonearm?will automatically return to its resting spot. Overall it is a great gadget if you have collected quite a few records or plan to continue to collect them.

(AP) ? Ford Motor Co. is building a sixth plant in China as part of an effort to increase its sales in the world's largest auto market.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally attended a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for the new $600 million assembly plant in the southwestern city of Chongqing. It will have the capacity to make 250,000 vehicles per year when it's finished in late 2014.

The plant is Ford's third in Chongqing, including one that began producing the Ford Focus in February. Ford plans to double its production capacity in China to 1.2 million vehicles by 2015, making this the company's most rapid expansion in 50 years.

Ford hasn't said which vehicles will be made at the new plant, but it will be equipped to make seven different models. Ford is planning to introduce 15 new vehicles here by 2015, including the EcoSport and Kuga small SUVs, which will be made at the new Focus plant in the Chongqing complex starting next year.

China's auto market last year overtook the U.S. as the world's largest, with sales up 32 percent to more than 18 million vehicles. The pace has slowed this year, to an increase of just 2.9 percent in the first six months, but the Chinese market is still expected to be the largest in the world.

"Asia Pacific is such a fantastic growth market, even though it has slowed a little bit," Mulally said.

Sales are expected to grow in the coming years as more rural Chinese buy cars for the first time. Even with 30 million cars on the road, China still has just 28 vehicles for every 1,000 people, far below the U.S. level of 800. Some 80 percent of purchases are by first-time buyers.

Ford, which sells seven models in China, is racing to catch up to rivals like General Motors Co. Ford currently controls about 3 percent of the Chinese market and sells only Ford-branded cars. GM, by contrast, sells 30 different vehicles under six brands in China. GM's Chinese market share hasn't been as low as Ford's share since 1998. Last year, GM controlled 14 percent of the Chinese market.

But Marin Burela, president and CEO of Ford's joint-venture partnership, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., said Ford has grown exponentially since 2003 when it sold just 17,000 vehicles in China. New products and more dealerships will help the company gain market share, he said, especially in the fast-growing cities in western China. Ford had 340 dealerships in China at the end of 2010; it expects to double that by 2015.

Also Monday, Ford confirmed that a plan to drop Mazda from the joint-venture partnership won regulatory approval from China's National Development and Reform Commission. The plan must still be approved by the Ministry of Commerce. Ford wants to change the joint-venture structure so that it has a 50-percent share with Chinese automaker Changan Automotive, versus the 35-percent share it now has with Mazda as a partner.

Lin Zou, 37, a medical researcher at a children's hospital in Chongqing, said she bought a red, two-door Ford Focus sedan five years ago because the brand was well-known and she considers U.S. cars to be safe. She also has a friend at a dealership in Chongqing, where many of her friends also drive Fords.

"If something goes wrong, I thought it would be very easy to repair because it's from Chongqing," she said.

The only negative: Her older Focus doesn't get very good gas mileage. But she says she'll consider Ford SUV when it's time for her to buy a new vehicle.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama's campaign of trying to link him to Rep. Todd Akin's statements about rape and abortion, calling that a sad new low in the bitter election race while conceding that controversy over the remarks is hurting the Republican Party.

Romney's comments were broadcast Sunday as Republicans poured into Florida prepared to cram four days of nominating convention events into three because of the threat caused by Tropical Storm Isaac.

Railing about a Democratic campaign they cast as harshly negative ? as the Democrats say about the GOP ? Romney and Republicans sought to reach out to female voters and Hispanics ? two voting blocs that polls show favor Obama. Top Republicans said it was crucial that the party broaden its appeal for the November election and for longer-term political viability.

Akin's remarks dogged the GOP as delegates and party officials gathered in this Florida city nervously eyeing overcast skies for the impending storm. Republicans scrambled to reconfigure their schedule, postponing the bulk of events that had been scheduled for Monday's opening day.

Akin is the GOP Missouri Senate candidate who said women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy from a "legitimate" rape. Romney and other GOP leaders have criticized those statements and urged Akin to drop out of the Senate race.

Asked in an interview, recorded earlier, on "Fox News Sunday" about what the questioner said were Obama campaign efforts to link Akin's remarks to Romney and other Republicans, the candidate said, "It really is sad, isn't it, with all the issues that America faces for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level."

Romney said the controversy over Akin "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women."

He said that as Massachusetts governor, he had helped women by guaranteeing coverage for them ? and men as well ? by enacting that state's health care legislation. Romney has pledged that as president he would repeal Obama's health care overhaul law ? which is similar to the Massachusetts statute ? but Romney said he was proud of his accomplishment at the state level.

Obama hasn't explicitly linked Romney to Akin, but he said in an interview with The Associated Press that the GOP candidate has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected president.

The Democratic Party, in fundraising appeals, has sought to tie the Romney-Paul Ryan ticket to Akin.

"Now, Akin's choice of words isn't the real issue here. The real issue is a Republican Party ? led by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan ? whose policies on women and their health are dangerously wrong," said a recent letter from Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic Party.

Separately, Republican National Party chairman Reince Priebus said Akin's insistence on staying in the Missouri Senate race could cost the party its chance to win control of the Senate.

Priebus said Akin "should put the mission of liberty and freedom ahead of himself" and leave the race.

Akin has ignored calls from national GOP leaders to leave the race against incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. Republicans hope to pick off her seat and capture a Senate majority in the November elections. Priebus made his comments Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

On the eve of the convention, the Romney campaign released a new ad using Obama's words on Medicare cuts from the 2008 campaign. The ad, with the catchphrase, "It ain't right," criticizes the $700 billion in Medicare cuts in Obama's health care law.

Meanwhile, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Romney must effectively reach women and Hispanics if he is to oust Obama in the November election.

Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," the former GOP presidential candidate said Romney must convince women and Hispanics that "jobs and the economy are more important perhaps than other issues."

Former Florida GOP Gov. Jeb Bush had a similar message about the Hispanic vote, saying on NBC, "Governor Romney can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth."

Bush, who has long urged his party to craft a more conciliatory message to Hispanics, added, "We've got to have a better tone going forward over the long haul for sure. You can't ask people to join your cause and then send a signal that 'you're really not wanted.' It just doesn't work."

As aides in Tampa scrambled, Romney was taking a rare day off the campaign trail at his lakeside vacation home in New Hampshire, receiving updates on the storm and making final preparations for the Thursday speech with which he will accept his party's presidential nomination.

"The safety of those in Isaac's path is of the utmost importance," Romney tweeted after Republican officials announced they had called off almost all of Monday's convention proceedings.

Though the storm appeared to be on a track that would pass well west of Tampa, storm surges and flooding from Isaac were still possible, and convention organizers said they were making contingency plans to move delegates who had been booked into beachfront hotels to other locations if necessary. They indicated the schedule shift also was meant to prevent overburdening emergency response personnel at the height of the storm.

The GOP made the announcement late Saturday, saying that while the convention would officially be gaveled into session on Monday as scheduled, events would be postponed until Tuesday.

Convention spokesman James Davis said the GOP's advice to delegates was "if your travel plans have not been interrupted and they're set, we recommend you come on down."

With Isaac nearing, Obama, who had been at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, dispatched the Federal Emergency Management Agency to establish a command center and move more resources into the state. Vice President Joe Biden scrapped a planned campaign trip into Florida that was to counter the start of the GOP convention.

Republicans hope to use this week's convention to cast Romney as a determined leader with the know-how to fix the country's economy. They also want to introduce him as a family figure to counter the image of him as a ruthless businessman as Democrats have sought to brand him.

Obama was due to travel next week to college towns in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia to court young voters. The president's nomination for a second term is to come next week in Charlotte, N.C.

The Democrat picked up the endorsement of former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, the Republican-turned-independent who lost the 2010 Senate race to Republican Marco Rubio.

In an article in the Tampa Bay Times, Crist called Obama the "right leader" for the state and the country. He criticized what he said was his former party's move to the right, saying it "has failed to demonstrate the kind of leadership or seriousness voters deserve."

A few of Romney's former presidential rivals were holding events of their own in Tampa. Herman Cain and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann ? both have endorsed Romney ? were appearing at a joint event. Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who hasn't conferred his endorsement on the Romney, was anticipating thousands at a University of South Florida rally.

Hertz to buy Dollar Thrifty for $2.3 billion

In a file photo a Ford Mustang is returned to an Oakland, Calif., Hertz location. Hertz has agreed to buy rival Dollar Thrifty for about $2.3 billion.

Hertz Global Holdings agreed to buy rival Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group for about $2.3 billion in a deal that puts about 95 percent of the U.S. car rental market in the hands of three companies.

The sale ends more than two years of on-off takeover talks for Dollar Thrifty involving Hertz, the No. 2. U.S. car rental company, and third-ranked Avis Group Inc that had been plagued by disagreements over price and doubts about regulatory approval.

The deal cements Hertz's position as the number two and leaves Avis far behind in third. Privately held Enterprise Holdings, with its Alamo, National and Enterprise brands, is far and away the market leader.

Shares of the Park Ridge, New Jersey-based Hertz jumped 14 percent in premarket trade on Monday, while Dollar Thrifty shares traded up 7 percent.

Dollar Thrifty, the final big target in an industry that has consolidated rapidly, this month urged Hertz to make a compelling bid or leave it alone.

Hertz will buy Dollar Thrifty for $87.50 per share in cash, a premium of 8 percent over Dollar Thrifty's Friday closing price of $81 on the New York Stock Exchange, and almost double a $1.2 billion offer Hertz made in April 2010.

Avis could still make a further bid. The deal does not carry with Hertz has no break-up fee and Dollar Thrifty is allowed dto solicit another offer for 30 days, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Several top Dollar Thrifty shareholders told Reuters last week they would accept a takeover offer from Hertz that valued the company at more than $87 per share.

Avis' entry into the bidding in 2010 pushed up the price for Dollar Thrifty, which was at one point during the financial crisis was offered $2 per share by Hertz.

Avis withdrew its offer after it bought Avis Europe last year for about $1 billion.

"Hertz has made a compelling offer to our stockholders that reflects the strength of our business," Dollar Thrifty Chief Executive Scott Thompson said in a statement.

In a bid to win regulatory approval for the deal, Hertz has agreed to sell its budget brand, Advantage, to Franchise Services of North America and Macquarie Capital. That sale is conditional on completing the Dollar Thrifty purchase.

Hertz did not specify the sale price but Bloomberg news, quoting a person familiar with the matter, reported the unit would be sold for $16 million.

Advantage competes directly with Dollar Thrifty in the budget car rental market.

Franchise Services is headed by Sanford Miller, who was once the CEO of Budget Group Inc, which is now a part of Avis.

Hertz said late on Sunday it expects at least $160 million of annual cost savings from the transaction.

Lazard, Barclays, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank are financial advisers to Hertz, while J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs are advising Dollar Thrifty.
