Archaeological dig reveals early Boise | China Antiques

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? A porcelain-toothed dollhead so creepy archaeologists took to calling it ?Chuckie? after the murderous movie doll.

Intact bottles whose stamped glass tells tiny tales: ?Sarsparilla, Lowell, Massachusetts.?

A shoe made of scab-brown leather as delicate as papyrus.

A porcelain lid from a jar of ?Oriental Tooth Paste,? advertised as ?England?s Favorite Dentifrice,? guaranteed to ?impart a delicate fragrance to the breath.?

Those are some of the 7,000 to 10,000 bits and pieces of Boise history turned up during a two-week excavation in August of an old well on Boise?s Basque block.

University of Idaho archaeologists also found marbles, tobacco tins and shards of flowered china in the well next to the Cyrus Jacobs/Uberuaga House on Grove Street.

The items, some of which will become part of a permanent exhibit, offer a glimpse of what life was like for upper-middle-class Boiseans in the post-Civil War years.

?They help us see what strivers of that era were emulating,? said U of I anthropology professor Stacey Camp, who co-directed the dig with her fellow professor Mark Warner.

Camp thinks many of the artifacts date to the era of the house?s original owners, the Jacobs family, who built the home in 1864. It did not become a Basque boarding house until the following century.

Cyrus Jacobs was an entrepreneur and merchant who owned a number of businesses. The preponderance of toys and remnants of imported products found ? French shaving cream along with the English toothpaste ? reveal a family with expendable income, Camp said.

Why and how items ended up in the well is anyone?s guess. The well could have doubled for a time as a garbage disposal, and residents also could have dropped items into it by mistake. The children of Grove Street could have been experimenting with their toys, never intending to lose them forever ? or until a team of student archaeologists pulled them up again in 2012.

The excavated items will be the centerpiece of a lab course Camp is teaching next semester. Students will catalog the objects and see whether they can match or ?crossmend? any of them to shards and objects unearthed during an earlier Basque block dig in 2004.

The community beyond Idaho has taken notice of the significant Boise dig. Archaeology Magazine included it in the ?World Roundup? column in its latest issue, along with the discovery of a slave ship in the Bahamas and a Neolithic bow in Spain.

Camp called the August excavation a ?dream dig.? More than 1,000 people stopped by the Cyrus Jacobs/Uberuaga House during the effort.

One of the purposes of the project was public outreach to give the community a rare chance to see active archaeology in the heart of a busy city.

The excavation team, which included several U of I students, was able to dig down 11 feet into the well adjacent to the historic house. Its timing was perfect: hitting the impassable water table and a layer of ?sterile,? or artifact-free, sand on the last day of the dig.

?We had worried that we would have to close up the well and leave items behind,? said Camp.

The old well was hidden for more than a century. Workers found it in May when they began renovation of an old porch on the east side of the house.

A number of other groups also supported the dig, including the Idaho Archaeological Society, the Idaho Heritage Trust and The Boise National Forest.

ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) ? Wet snow and high winds spinning off the edge of superstorm Sandy spread blizzard conditions over parts of West Virginia and neighboring Appalachian states Tuesday, shutting one interstate as trucks and cars bogged down and knocking out power to many.

The National Weather Service said a foot and more of snow was reported in lower elevations of West Virginia, where most towns and roads are. High elevations in the mountains were getting more than two feet and a blizzard warning for more than a dozen counties was in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

At least 236,000 customers were without power in West Virginia early Tuesday. In Elkins, a city of about 7,000 people, power went out across town before dawn and the only lights were from passing snow plows as heavy, wet flakes piled up to about 8 inches.

The roofs of at least three homes collapsed under the weight of heavy snow, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said. No injuries were reported in the Tuesday accidents in Nicholas County. West Virginia National Guard troops helped the residents of the homes get to local shelters.

Tomblin says there's been no word of additional deaths or any serious injuries. Officials earlier reported a woman was killed Monday in a storm-related traffic accident in an area where about 5 inches of snow had fallen.

The governor is urging residents to stay off the roads. That will prevent mishaps and allow National Guard, Division of Highways and Division of Forestry crews to clear felled trees for utility repair workers.

Tomblin says forecasters estimate that the storm's brunt should clear the state by nightfall.

Authorities closed nearly 50 miles of Interstate 68 on either side of the West Virginia-Maryland state line for hours early Tuesday because of blizzard conditions and stuck vehicles.

More than 30 other highways and roads were closed in West Virginia by snow, ice, high water, and downed trees and power lines. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater said. Schools were closed in at least 39 counties.

"It's a mess out there and people should stay home if they can until our first responders can get out there, clear the roads and get to those who need the most assistance," Fitzwater said.

On the Maryland side of I-68, crews were trying to remove several tractor-trailers stuck on the highway. Four or five passenger vehicles also were abandoned in the median, State Highway Administration spokeswoman Kelly Boulware said.

The higher elevations in western parts of Maryland received more than a foot of snow since Monday afternoon, and it was still snowing Tuesday before dawn, Boulware said.

Police rescued several stranded motorists on the interstate in West Virginia, a spokeswoman for the state's Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

A significant winter storm continued in northeast Tennessee, where snow was forecast for higher elevations through Wednesday morning.

At Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, park spokeswoman Dana Soehn reported 22 inches of snow at the highest elevations, with strong winds blowing drifts up to 4 feet deep.

Roads were closed throughout the park and a handful of hikers coming off sections of the Appalachian Trial on Tuesday morning reporting tangles of fallen trees and waist-deep drifts.

"We don't know exactly how many people are still up there, but we've not received any distress calls," Soehn said. "It's that heavy, wet snow, so it is difficult to plow."

Show must go on: Broadway plays coming back

By Reuters

Broadway will be back in full force by Thursday, predicts Broadway League Executive Director Charlotte St. Martin. Though the Great White Way stayed dark from Sunday night through Tuesday while New York City braced for Hurricane Sandy, the theater district believes that the time has come to turn on the marquee lights.?

"There is a tradition on Broadway that the show must go on," St. Martin told TheWrap. "It goes to the core of our actors, producers, stage hands and the people who work on Broadway. It's a century old, and it's what we've always done."?

Although the city is still clearing through the debris left by the devastating super storm, St. Martin said that Broadway has not suffered from any of New York's widespread power outages. She added that she believes that the theater business has a civic duty to be up and running as soon as possible after a tragedy, noting that performances resumed two days after the 9/11 attacks at the request of then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

To that end, only two productions will remain dark Wednesday night -- "Mary Poppins" and "The Lion King" -- and that was because producers did not reach enough members of the cast and crew by phone Tuesday to be certain they had a big enough team to mount the major musical productions. Three other shows -- "Evita," "Jersey Boys" and "Scandalous" -- called off their matinees, but not their evening performances.

St. Martin said she has not heard reports from Wednesday's matinees, but was confident that New York City's flooded subway system had not prevented crew members and cast from making it to the theater in time.

"We would not be bringing shows back, if we were not positive critical people will be there," she said. "There may not be as many ushers as usual, but we're all good at finding our own seats, and we would not go on if there were any safety issues."

Broadway theaters will refund or exchange tickets for people who cannot make the shows on account of the weather, St. Martin said. She noted, however, that while many flights and trains have been canceled, preventing out-of-town visitors from catching shows they bought tickets for in advance, there are many tourists who are stuck in the city and would welcome the diversion. The same need for levity applies to the storm-shocked city dwellers, she said.

"This has nothing to do with greed and everything to do with the spirit of Broadway," St. Martin said. "We are here to serve New York and to provide escape from tragedy, even if it's just for a few hours."?

Hurricane Sandy: With 8.1 million in the dark, utility crews get busy

Hurricane Sandy inflicted most of its damage in heavily populated states including New York and New Jersey. The storm also caused three nuclear power plants to shut down.

By Mark Clayton,?Staff writer / October 30, 2012

A National Grid crew restores electric power to a neighborhood on October 29, in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Hurricane Sandy knocked out power along the east coast in eight states: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, and West Virginia ? some 7.4 million customers.

More than 8.1 million customers in 17 states were left in the dark in the wake of hurricane Sandy, which smashed ashore Monday night in New Jersey and immediately began dismantling chunks of the eastern power grid.

In terms of its outage impact, hurricane Sandy was roughly on a par with hurricane Irene, which in August 2011 knocked out power to more than 9.3 million customers along the East Coast and in Puerto Rico ? about 6 million in 13 East Coast states.

But Sandy's impact was more concentrated than Irene's, doing the bulk of its damage in fewer but more heavily populated states. Most of the outages were in eight states: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, and West Virginia ? some 7.4 million customers.

"The magnitude of this event is really huge," says Mark Merritt, president of Witt Associates, a public-safety and crisis-management consulting firm in Washington. "From North Carolina to Maine, utilities are dealing with coastal power issues from flooding to snow impacts in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. A lot of these companies, public and private, are competing for limited resources, scrambling, so it's a challenge for everyone."

With crews coming from all over, even the West Coast, hurricane Sandy has become an "an all-hands-on-deck-type event," Mr. Merritt says. Still, there were signs that power restoration could be slow in some of the hardest-hit areas.

Restoration of power in New York, for one, is going to be exceedingly complex, with blown transformers, flooded underground utilities, and waterlogged subways. Repairs may go more slowly than many had hoped, despite the high level of preparation by utility companies.

Excessive flooding from the storm surge knocked out a number of substations in New Jersey?s Essex, Hudson, and Middlesex counties, according to the utility Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G). Those stations, which serve about 462,000 customers, will be out of service until the water recedes and equipment can be cleaned and dried, the utility reported.

Consolidated Edison, a big New York utility, said first reports indicated more than 200 wires down on Staten Island. The company cut service overnight to two sections of lower Manhattan and a chunk of Brooklyn to protect underground delivery systems from floodwaters. The electrical equipment there would then have to have all components cleaned of seawater, dried, and tested.

Meanwhile, three nuclear power plants in the northeastern United States had to shut down, and two units cut back their power output as a result of effects from hurricane Sandy, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported.

PSEG Nuclear manually shut down its Salem Unit 1 in southern New Jersey at 1:09 a.m. Monday when four of the station?s six circulating water pumps became unavailable due to weather impacts. Circulating water pumps use Delaware Bay water to condense steam on the nonnuclear side of the plant.

Entergy Nuclear also shut down its Indian Point Unit 3 reactor, 38 miles north of New York City, at 10:45 p.m. on Monday "due to external electrical grid issues," the company reported. About two hours earlier, at 9 p.m., Constellation Energy reported that its Nine Mile Unit 1 near Oswego, N.Y., experienced an automatic reactor shutdown whose cause was being investigated.

Two of six refineries were shut down as of Tuesday morning, with the four others operating at reduced capacity, the Energy Department reported.

At a news conference, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) spoke of homes knocked off foundations and amusement-park rides rammed into the sea. ?The level of devastation on the Jersey Shore is unthinkable,? he said.

Governor Christie, who has indicated a distinct disinterest in the presidential election, nevertheless praised President Obama on his response to, and preparation for, the storm.

"The president has been all over this, he deserves great credit.... He gave me his number at the White House, told me to call if I needed anything, and he absolutely means it,? he said. ?It's been very good working with the president, and his administration has been coordinating with us great."

According to some early estimates from economists, hurricane Sandy, with its massive flooding, is more akin to hurricane Katrina than hurricane Irene. Katrina was the nation?s most expensive natural disaster costing about $41 billion in property damage, according to one insurance company report.

Now the race begins to see how fast electricity can be restored to limit the overall economic damage. Utilities have been under pressure since major power outages from storms last year to do a better job this time. To that end, they have been prepositioned thousands of line crews from out of state. Now politicians and customers will be waiting ? and waiting ? to see how long it takes.

?We expected an unprecedented storm,? New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a press conference Tuesday morning. ?That?s what we got.?

Iran orchestra finale rings of hard-line pressure

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? It was a VIP audience for what was likely the last performance of the venerable Tehran Symphony Orchestra. Watching from the front row in late August was Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in what was seen as an endorsement from the ruling theocracy, which once tried to stamp out all music as a violation of Islamic values.

Just two months later, the musicians are out of work, funding has run dry and a nearly 80-year-old institution that survived wars, coups and the 1979 Islamic Revolution was declared Tuesday in an apparently irreversible "coma" by media.

The apparent tipping point was financial. It could be counted as collateral damage from Western sanctions that have left Iran's economy so stressed that authorities are considering banning exports of staples such as rice and wheat in order to boost emergency stockpiles.

"We are currently facing a financial drought," Parliament speaker Ali Larijani told a group of officials Monday. "We will have a more difficult year ahead."

The full story of the orchestra's demise likely runs deeper. In a time of escalating showdowns with the West over Iran's suspect nuclear program, the opposition of Iran's clerical leadership toward anything deemed as too Western is gaining strength.

"Musicians have had no support in recent years," said Saba Radman, a music journalist and critic. "They feel very disillusioned."

The Tehran orchestra ? by far the oldest and biggest of several concert hall-style ensembles in Iran ? was often an easy target of hard-liners because of its roots during the era of the Western-backed monarchy toppled by the Islamic Revolution. During its heyday in the 1960s and 70s, it hosted performances by world famous musicians such as violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin.

The orchestra fell further from favor during a European tour after the riots triggered by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009. Opposition supporters in Europe used the concerts as forums to denounce Iran's ruling system and flash the green wrist bands and scarves that symbolized the protest movement.

Meanwhile, Islamic conservatives ? including forces within the powerful Revolutionary Guard ? have reclaimed influence since the widespread crackdowns on reformists and can even exert muscle over Supreme Leader Khamenei. Cultural groups outside direct state control, such as the Tehran orchestra, have often come under suspicion as potential liberal-leaning havens. In January, authorities closed down the House of Cinema, an independent film group that operated for 20 years.

"Many concerts have been canceled by local authorities over the past years, but the Culture Ministry raised no objections," said Radman.

Hamid Shahabadi, the deputy culture minister in charge of artistic affairs, acknowledged some delays in payments for musicians while insisting that the orchestra has not been disbanded, but he indicated that its musicians need to look for work elsewhere.

He suggested some could be absorbed into a planned state-run institution that would oversee all remaining orchestras. Those concentrate heavily on traditional Persian music.

Iran's Islamic authorities tried to ban all music in the early years of the Islamic Revolution, claiming it violated strict Muslim tenets. The clerics eventually relented, but, as recently as 2005, Ahmadinejad tried unsuccessfully to outlaw Western music on state-run television and radio.

At the same time, the Tehran Orchestra performed Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 ? drawing criticism from some conservatives because the piece was associated with liberals and secular groups during the early years of the Islamic Revolution.

A year later, it brought more grimaces from Islamic authorities for its program in Germany that included Tchaikovsky's Overture to "Romeo and Juliet" and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony ? with a snippet of "Dog Breath Variations" by American rock impresario Frank Zappa slipped in.

In late August, the orchestra may have played its last piece ? the Iranian national anthem ? at the opening of the Nonaligned Movement summit, which Iranian officials billed as a world gathering to challenge the economic pressures of the West over Tehran's nuclear program.

Orchestra members told the semiofficial ILNA news agency Monday that they have not rehearsed together or been paid for three months. An experienced musician may receive just 6 million rials, or less than $200 a month at the current exchange rates ? below an average taxi driver's pay ? and must supplement income through other performances or professions.

"Many (Iranian) artists are working as taxi drivers, office secretaries and accountants" rather than focusing on their profession, singer Fazel Jamshidi was quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency.

Arsalan Kamkar, a violinist in the orchestra, told The Associated Press on Monday that "only seven or eight members of the orchestra have valid contracts. Unfortunately, the rest have not had contracts over the past months, and it seems unlikely their contracts will be extended."

Kamkar said the shutdown highlights the dislike for Western-oriented culture by Iran's rulers, who are also sitting on one of the world's prized collections of European and American modern art.

In August, the Museum of Contemporary Art displayed about 100 works purchased by the late shah and his family ? including pieces by Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Jasper Johns. But most of the collection ? works by Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Francis Bacon and many others ? remains in vaults and basement storage.

Hawaii tsunami warning canceled after lower than expected waves

HONOLULU (Reuters) - Hawaii state officials on Sunday canceled a tsunami advisory prompted by a powerful earthquake off the Canadian coast that sent thousands of people fleeing to higher ground, but did not cause major damage.

The advisory was canceled shortly before 4 a.m. local time (1400 GMT) after the anticipated waves rolled in lower than expected, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Kevin Richards, earthquake and tsunami manager for Hawaii State Civil Defense, said water, gas and power lines were not damaged by the smaller-than-expected waves.

"Everything is normal," Richards said. "We're in good shape with this one."

Tens of thousands of people fled shoreline areas on Saturday night following siren blasts and a tsunami warning from the center that waves as tall as 6 feet could hit in some places.

Scientists downgraded the warning to an advisory shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday (1100 GMT) and there were no reports of injuries, serious flooding or damage.

The highest wave measured 2.5 feet, and that hit Kahului harbor on the island of Maui, said Dr. Gerard Fryer, senior geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

All beaches were reopened on Oahu, the most populated island in Hawaii, on Sunday morning, Richards said. Beaches remained closed on the island of Hawaii, but were set to reopen shortly.

Tsunami warning sirens began blaring across the islands at about 8 p.m. on Saturday as state officials ordered a coastal evacuation, prompting a mass exodus that clogged roadways as motorists fled low-lying areas.

On Oahu, the sirens prompted an immediate crush of traffic in Honolulu, with many motorists stopping at service stations to top up with gasoline.

Vindell Hsu, a geophysicist at the tsunami warning center, said the evacuation affected an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 people who live in Hawaii's coastal zones.

But residents and visitors resumed their daily lives around the state on Sunday. One woman, vacationing at a beachfront home in Kailua, Oahu, said this is the second time she has been evacuated from a tsunami warning.

"I do not think the state over-reacted at all," said Heidi Wilson, a San Diego resident. "I was blown away at the coordinated effort on all the islands. I felt secure with all the precautions."

The warnings followed a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that hit off Canada's Pacific coastal province of British Columbia late on Saturday.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 123 miles south-southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 6.2 miles.

The Earthquakes Canada agency said the temblor was followed by numerous aftershocks as large as magnitude 4.6 and that a small tsunami had been recorded by a deep-ocean pressure sensor.

The last time Oahu had a tsunami warning was after the devastating Japanese earthquake of March 2011.

Fryer said scientists overestimated the wave sizes in part because deep ocean sensors had a bad angle on the tsunami. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center plans to carefully review the event.

"We have to see what worked and what didn't work ... and find ways to reduce unnecessary evacuations and still not miss anything," Fryer said.

UN says 22,000 displaced in latest Myanmar unrest

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? Victims of Myanmar's latest explosion of Muslim-Buddhist violence fled to already packed displacement camps along the country's western coast, with a top U.N. official saying the unrest has forced more than 22,000 people from their homes.

State television reported the casualty toll has risen to 84 dead and 129 injured over the past week in nine townships in Rakhine state. The figures have not been broken down by ethnic group, but New York-based Human Rights Watch has said Rohingya Muslims bore the brunt of the unrest and the true death toll may be far higher.

On Sunday, wooden boats carrying some refugees arrived outside the state capital, Sittwe. The people trudged to the Thechaung camp, already home to thousands of Rohingya who took refuge there after a previous wave of violence in June.

"I fled my hometown, Pauktaw, on Friday because there is no security at all," said 42-year-old fisherman Maung Myint, who arrived on a boat carrying 40 other people, including his wife and six children. "My house was burned to ashes and I have no money left."

Another Muslim refugee said she fled her village, Kyaukphyu, on Thursday after attackers set her home on fire.

"We don't feel safe," said 40-year-old Zainabi, a fish seller who left with her two sons, aged 12 and 14. "I wish the violence would stop so we can live peacefully."

Human Rights Watch released dramatic satellite imagery of Kyaukphyu on Saturday showing a vast, predominantly Rohingya swath of the village in ashes. The destruction included more than 800 buildings and floating barges.

There were no reports of new violence Sunday. It was unclear what sparked the latest clashes, but ill will between Muslims and Buddhists in Rakhine state goes back decades and has its roots in a dispute over the Rohingya's origins. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are seen as foreign intruders who came from Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

Today, the Rohingya also face official discrimination, a policy encouraged by Myanmar's previous military regimes to enlist popular support among other groups. A 1984 law formally excluded them as one of the country's 135 ethnicities, meaning most are denied basic civil rights and are deprived of citizenship.

Neighboring Bangladesh, which also does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens, says thousands of Rohingya refugees have sought to flee there by boat. Its policy, however, is to refuse them entry.

Rights groups say Myanmar's failure to address the root causes of the crisis means the situation may worsen.

Over the weekend, Border Affairs Minister Lt. General Thein Htay traveled to the affected areas with the U.N. resident and humanitarian coordinator in Myanmar, Ashok Nigam.

Nigam said 22,587 were displaced and they included both Muslims and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, but he gave no breakdown.

Speaking to The Associated Press on Sunday while visiting Thechaung camp, Nigam said getting aid to the new wave of displaced people will be a challenge as some fled on boats and others have sought refuge on isolated hilltops.

"The situation is certainly very grave and we are working with the government to provide urgent aid to these people," he said.

Some 4,600 homes were also destroyed, according to the U.N, which said it had begun distributing emergency food and shelter supplies to refugees.

The latest unrest pushes the total displaced to nearly 100,000 since the clashes in June, when at least 90 people died and 3,000 homes were destroyed. About 75,000 people, mostly Rohingya, have lived in refugee camps since then.

"It is critically important that the government ensures that the rule of law prevails, prevents any further spreading of this violence and continues to communicate strong messages of harmony," Nigam said in a statement later Sunday.

"The violence, fear and mistrust are contrary to the democratic transition and economic and social development that Myanmar is committed to," Nigam said. "It should not become an impediment to progress."

SpaceX capsule lands after historic mission to Space Station

NASA's first commercial cargo flight ended with a splash on Sunday, when the SpaceX Dragon capsule landed after a landmark mission to the International Space Station.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. Manned missions could threaten Mars life

Humanity has long dreamed of putting boots on Mars, but those boots have the potential to stomp all over any lifeforms that may exist on the Red Planet.

    4. Japan wants to fly space plane by 2022

The unmanned Dragon space capsule, built by the U.S. company Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), splashed down into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California at 3:22 p.m. EDT (1922 GMT), ending a three-week visit to the orbiting laboratory.

Dragon began its descent with a de-orbit burn at 2:28 p.m. EDT (1828 GMT), after departing the station at 9:29 a.m. EDT (1329 GMT) as both spacecraft sailed 255 miles (410 kilometers) above Burma. The station's crew used the outpost's robotic arm to release the spacecraft.

"It was nice while she was on board. We tamed her [and] took her home," space station commander Sunita Williams of NASA radioed Mission Control in Houston as the Dragon capsule departed. "Literally and figuratively, there are pieces of us on that spacecraft going home to Earth."

The Dragon capsule is returning hundreds of astronaut blood and urine samples from the space station amid the 1,673 pounds (758 kilograms) of experiments and gear loaded on board. Some of those samples have been waiting for more than a year. NASA's final space shuttle mission landed in July 2011, leaving the agency without a way to return big cargo deliveries to Earth until Dragon's flight.

[ Photos: Dragon's 1st Space Cargo Delivery ]

The spacecraft is expected to be retrieved by a SpaceX recovery crew so the cargo can be delivered to NASA. The mission is the first of 12 commercial resupply flights by SpaceX under a $1.6 billion deal with NASA.

The Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX (short for Space Exploration Technologies) launched the Dragon capsule toward the space station on Oct. 7 using one of the company's own Falcon 9 rockets and a pad at Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The capsule was packed with 882 pounds (400 kg) of supplies to for the station, including 260 pounds (117 kg) of crew gear, 390 pounds (176 kg) of scientific equipment, 225 pounds (102 kg) of hardware and several pounds of other cargo, NASA officials said.

The cargo returning home on Dragon are 163 pounds (74 kg) of crew supplies, 866 pounds (392 kg) of scientific research and 518 pounds (235 kg) of other hardware, they added. ?

SpaceX is the first robotic spacecraft ever to be capable of returning cargo to Earth.

"It has been an historic mission," NASA spokesman Josh Byerly said during undocking commentary. ?

The unmanned cargo ships built by Russia, Japan and Europe are all designed for one-way trips and are intentionally destroyed during re-entry at the end of their missions. The Russian Soyuz capsules that ferry crews to and from the space station have limited cargo return capabilities, NASA scientists have said.

SpaceX was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002 as a private spaceflight company. In May, the company launched its first Dragon capsule test flight to the space station to set the stage for this month's first cargo delivery flight. The next Dragon cargo mission is slated to launch in mid-January.

SpaceX is one of two companies with deals to launch cargo delivery flights on unmanned spacecraft for NASA. The other company, Virginia's Orbital Sciences Corp., has a $1.9 billion contract with the agency for at least eight missions to the station using the new Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft. The first Antares test flight is set for later this year.

With its space shuttle fleet retired, NASA is relying on the Dragon and Cygnus spacecraft to ferry U.S. supplies to and from the International Space Station. The space agency is also supporting the development of new commercial U.S. spacecraft to launch American astronauts on space station trips.

SpaceX is one of four companies currently developing manned private space taxis with NASA funding support. The company is upgrading its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsules to eventually launch crews of seven astronauts into orbit.

Honda introduces car designed just for women

The TODAY anchors, along with Billy Bush and Kit Hoover of "Access Hollywood Live," talk about the new Honda Fit She's, a car designed specifically for women that will feature a windshield to help prevent wrinkles and will come in the color pink.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

The auto industry has traditionally been male-dominated but Honda has rolled out a new model it claims to have specifically designed with women in mind.

The new Honda Fit She?s is a pretty-in-pink version of the maker?s familiar subcompact that offers a few niceties the maker believes will specifically appeal to distaff buyers, such as a windshield designed to block skin-wrinkling ultraviolet rays.

But will women actually care? While the new Honda subcompact may be the only car currently on the road specifically targeting women there?s a good reason.? Previous feminine offerings, such as the old Dodge LaFemme, met with little more than indifference and, in some cases, outright hostility.

Toyota Back on Track as Global Sales Leader

Priced at $17,500 ? at current exchange rates ? the Honda Fit She?s is currently available only in the Japanese market and it?s unclear whether the maker will roll it out in other parts of the world.

Like those vehicles handed out as prizes by Mary Kay Cosmetics, the dominant shade is pink, starting with the exterior paint and including the interior pink stitching and tutti-frutti-hued chrome bezels. If that doesn?t get the message across, Honda uses a pretty little heart to replace the apostrophe in ?She?s.?

To Honda?s credit, the maker also has plans to offer the special model in an alternate hue that might best be called ?eyeliner brown.?

The Fit She?s also delivers some other features women might appreciate.? That includes the special UV-blocking window glass.? Recent studies have underscored concerns that extended exposure to the sun while driving can be nearly as bad for the skin as spending too much time on the beach.?

Iconic London ?Black? Cab Could Soon Vanish

The Honda Fit She?s also features a ?Plasmacluster? climate control system the maker claims can improve skin quality.

The decision to offer the car in the Japanese market isn?t all that much of a surprise considering the country?s more traditional sex-defined roles. As much as half of all Japanese women stay out of the workforce and still more tend to shift to homemakers after getting married. But even for those women who do join the workforce, there is? more of a divide in tastes than one might find in Western countries.

That has stifled efforts by European and U.S. manufacturers who previously tried to target products directly to women.? Chrysler, for one, thought it had a winner with the 1955 LaFemme. The sedan featured special storage places for hat and purse ? and the driver?s seat swiveled to allow a woman wearing a skirt to enter or exit the vehicle with appropriate modesty.? Nonetheless, like the few other offerings openly aimed at American women over the years, LaFemme proved LaFlop.

One might think that the U.S. auto industry would be inspired by the Honda Fit She?s. After all, women now directly purchase over a third of the vehicles sold in the States, while data from J.D. Power and Associates suggests they ?influence? as much as 60% of all vehicle purchases.

Honda Tells Dealers, Clear Out Old Civic for ?Emergency Refresh?

Yet, just the hint of being a ?woman?s car? can prove the kiss of death.? Despite their tremendous flexibility and functionality, minivans lost much of? their cache, noted Nissan marketing executive Tom Smith, when they become known as ?soccer-mom vehicles.?? Chrysler tried to counter that image when it released its latest? version of the Dodge Durango by dubbing it the ?man van,? but with little success.

Volkswagen blames the fall off in sales of the so-called ?New Beetle? to the fact that the vehicle became known as a ?chick car.? Jonathon Browning, head of Volkswagen Group of America, says the maker specifically wanted to make the latest version of the Beetle, introduced a year ago, ?look more masculine.?

That doesn?t mean makers are ignoring the needs of women.? Both Ford and General Motors, among many makers, have established groups of women designers and engineers who specifically consider the features and attributes of new products looking for ways to appeal to feminine needs ? and avoid problems that might not be apparent to their male colleagues.

That might include door handles that can snap off long fingernails. And a number of new vehicles now feature larger center storage bins able to handle a pocketbook ? while men get the added benefit of being able to tuck away their iPads and other electronic goodies.

Some makers have also introduced new colors that they believe will have bigger appeal to women buyers ? though whatever their sex, studies by paint suppliers like DuPont Automotive show that silver, black and white continue to dominate.

So, while automakers clearly want to win over women shoppers, few are likely to follow Honda?s lead, especially outside of Japan.? In most of the rest of the world, women car buyers just wanted to be treated as one of the guys.

Want To Make Home Improvements? Check Out These Tips First ...

A good way to get ideas on home improvement can be to look around in a hardware store. Hardware stores will often have plans that can be used to get new ideas for improving ones home. They will also have the needed materials for whatever project one chooses to take on.

Tell your contractor your real budget. Many people are afraid that if they tell how much they can actually spend, the contractor will make an effort to spend at least that much. Contractors are interested in giving you the best quality work, so you need to be honest with them about what they have to work with.

Home improvement is a task that must be completed with quality materials. It is known that you will equally get out of your work, what you put in. Make sure that quality of your materials is good because using cheap materials will cost you much more in the long run than what you saved in the beginning.

When moving into a home you should get an alarm system installed. There are people who may have been in your home when it belonged to the previous owner and who know how to easily get in and out of your home. An alarm system will protect your home from intruders.

Update the lighting in your home to add brightness. Changes in lighting fixtures and adding additional wall lighting can bring an entirely new look to your home. Buy energy saving bulbs to reduce your overall energy costs and consider investing in a smart lighting system that will automatically turn off lights when not in use.

When it comes to home improvement, consider adding solar panels to your house. While the upfront cost may be large, you may find it to be a wise investment in comparison to the rising costs of electricity. This will save on your monthly electric bills, because the most of your energy will come from the energy you are storing. This is a good, natural solution to powering your house.

Interior lighting can be used to create the illusion of spaciousness in narrow hallways or nooks. Install light fixtures above eye level along the length of the corridor in such a way that the light is directed downward. In addition to making the area feel larger, it can also be used to illuminate family portraits and decorative wall elements.

If one is looking for a way to improve their home as well as provide themselves with a supply of fresh food then building a small chicken coop may be the thing to do. Not only will it provide one with a supply of eggs but it can even bring in money if one sells the eggs.

When cutting, nailing, or drilling into walls, always be sure to remember this important home improvement tip. Always use a stud finder before penetrating any walls. A stud finder will find studs behind the wall so that you won?t run into them, which could be hazardous, especially if the studs are near electrical wire.

Before you begin to paint the bookshelf in your living room, make sure to sand it down to it?s natural finish. After you sand it down, be sure to read the pros and cons of each paint choice. By doing this, you?ll end up with the bookshelf you imagined.

For a personalized and one-of-a-kind wall covering, consider designing and ordering your own customized wallpaper online or through a local design studio. New websites offer a variety of options for wallpaper design, including enlarged photographs, murals, or even your children?s artwork delivered to your door in a matter of weeks.

An easily-missed factor in cooling costs is your AC unit. You may not need to replace your insulation or windows, if you simply replace or clean the filters in your air conditioner. This is true for both window and central air units. The cost of a new filter for your central unit is much less than new insulation!

You should be home when you are having home improvements made. Many contractors hire outside individuals to help them with the improvements. Not every contractor is as trustworthy as they seem and there are chances that things in your home could be damaged or come up missing if you are not home while the repairs are being made.

One way to save money and energy is to buy a programmable thermostat if you don?t already have one. A programmable thermostat will allow you to specify what temperature you want your house to be at any given time or day throughout the week, even when you are away from home.

To insure that you always know who is knocking, install wide-angle peepholes on each of your exterior doors. These special lenses allow you to see who is standing on your porch or patio without opening the door or pulling back the drapes. Moreover, they are fairly simple to install.

Installing new shelves in a garage or other area can give one much more space to store whatever they choose while also clearing space off the ground. This will open up the walking areas of the room and also make things look more organized. Shelves can be used for home improvement needs.

If the stain on your deck has been damaged through years of wear and tear and is beginning to fade it can turn into an ugly gray color. It is within your reach to re-stain your deck and give it a make over. You will first need to strip the old stain off! Remember this when you have made your final decision.

Home improvement really is a creative endeavor, but that does not mean it is only for professional or serious home improvers. This creative endeavor can be enjoyed by anyone of any improvement skill level. These tips were constructed to help those of all levels find their way into home improvement.

Creamy Mushroom Pasta - Eat. Drink. Love.

How is it that October is almost over?! Seriously, where did it go?! I?m so not ready for this month to be over. I?m enjoying all the Halloween movies, candy, and decorations. I know I?ve said it many times, but this is my favorite time of year. Lots of decorations, AMC Fear Fest, and comfort food. This month is all about comfort food. For example, a big bowl of creamy pasta.

And you know what rocks? When that creamy pasta doesn?t actually contain any cream. I love finding ways to sub heavy cream in dishes. There are a lot of great alternatives out there these days like low fat cream cheese or greek yogurt. One ingredient I haven?t really tried is sour cream.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. pasta (you can use whichever type you prefer)
  • 7 oz. mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 medium white onion, diced
  • 2 tbs. olive oil
  • 1/3 cup low fat sour cream
  • 1/4 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • splash white wine
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Boil a pot of water for the pasta. Season with the salt. Cook pasta until tender and drain.
  2. In a non-stick pan, heat the olive oil on medium heat. Add the mushrooms and onions in an even layer. Cook for about 3 minutes. Flip the mushrooms over and cook for another 3 minutes.
  3. Add in the pasta and toss with the mushrooms. Add in the sour cream, broth, white wine, Parmesan cheese, and the salt and pepper. Toss thoroughly until well-combined. Serve with additional grated Parmesan cheese and parsley on top.

Tabla Restaurant Portland Oregon

Interior.?Photo by Ryan Ribary

Tabla may feel like a local, neighborhood restaurant, but it strives to be something more. Located on the NE corner of Davis and NE 28th, it has plenty of windows for a bright airy feel. The space is long and thin, a full bar taking up a good part of the north side, and a large open kitchen in the back. For the spectator among us, there is a chef?s counter that puts you in the center of the action. Down a hallway, separate from the rest of the dining room, is a private party space that holds up to about fourteen people. Additional tables stretch down the Davis street sidewalk. The atmosphere of the entire restaurant is very comfortable and relaxed, though the noise level can get fairly high on busy nights.

You are made to feel welcome the moment you walk through the door. Unfortunately, the total service experience?doesn?t?always stand up to the greeting. On some visits, service has been excellent, on others, the staff has obviously been overwhelmed. To be fair, this has only happened to me when they have a packed house.

Tabla Portland Chinook Salmon

Pan-Seared Chinook Salmon

One of the best deals in town, Tabla has a $28.00 three course dinner. If you go with this choice, you?ll be choosing one item from each column of the menu: an appetizer, one half pasta portion, and one full entr?e. This is a great introduction to the restaurant, and the portions are large enough to satisfy most people. A few of the more expensive choices have a slight surcharge of a couple of dollars. Of course you can ignore these prix-fixe options, and order as you normally would.

Pastas are my favorite items.?Five are available, all homemade, and all of excellent quality: tajarin, just like?I?ve?had in Piedmont ? thin house made pasta, truffle butter and grana Padano cheese. The pasta is perfectly made, almost elegant, giving ever so lightly to the tooth, the truffle butter and cheese setting off a wave of aroma that washes over your palate.?The Tabla ravioli is a similar sensory experience. A ring of chard and ricotta is layered atop a thin sheet of house-made pasta. An egg is nestled within the ring, and the pasta shell applied to the top. After a quick cooking, it is brushed with poppy-seed butter and cheese. The overall effect was of a silk purse on the tongue, the egg flavor throughout, unexpectedly bursting as you bite into it like warm velvet river.

Tabla Portland

Fettucini Verde

The green fettuccine adds an unexpected element by using pistachio in a lighter than expected sauce. The cherry tomatoes are bright little bursts of flavor, and the milky white dry Ricotta puts it over the edge. Another winner is the tagliatelle with a porky sauce of tomato, basil, and grana Padano cheese. A slight spice gives a long, unexpected finish.

Overall, complaints are few. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. When queried about a specific dish, the servers know the ingredients, and can rattle off suggestions from the excellent wine list with no trouble. You can read my more detailed review here.

The New York Times' Michael Shear and Helene Cooper: " With Debates Over, Candidates Race to Clinch Vital States" President Obama started making his closing argument for a second term on Tuesday, beginning a furious two-week effort to beat back a late surge by Mitt Romney and hang on to battleground states where voters are already casting ballots in large numbers. LINK

The Washington Post's Philip Rucker and David Fahrenthold: " Candidates reveal their strategies for the home stretch" On Tuesday, the presidential candidates unveiled their endgames. After a debate season that reversed the two men's fortunes in the polls, President Obama indicated that he would run in the last two weeks of the race as an underdog. "I don't want to lose this election," he told supporters in an e-mail. LINK

Politico's Alexander Burns: " What the campaigns really meant" Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama have just two weeks to make their closing arguments. There are few if any opportunities left for either candidate to move the 2012 race in a big way. Both campaigns are hoping that either a powerful turnout operation or a perfectly resonant message will tip the race ever so slightly in their direction. LINK

SWING STATES The Wall Street Journal's Carole E. Lee. Patrick O' Connor and Danny Yadron: " Candidates Battle to Lock Up Key States" Backed by a ramp-up in TV ad purchases, Mitt Romney will spend much of the final two weeks of the campaign presenting himself as a bipartisan bridge-builder, aides said, while President Barack Obama tries to persuade voters that his Republican rival is painting a centrist veneer over conservative policy positions. With the last of their debates behind them, the candidates offered Tuesday a look at the closing arguments they plan to make in the home stretch and where they intend to work hardest to drive them home. LINK

The Hill's Amie Parnes and Justin Sink: " Obama, Romney battle to define state of tight White House race" President Obama and Mitt Romney battled Tuesday to define the state of the presidential race with just two weeks to go before Election Day. Senior Obama campaign officials blitzed the airwaves a day after a combative performance by Obama at the third presidential debate, with senior strategist David Axelrod saying his candidate was "even or ahead" in every battleground. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Seema Mehta:" Voters in Ohio village skeptical of both Obama and Romney" They gather at this old watering hole every week, watching Steelers games and catching up, talking about their children and grandchildren, layoffs and job prospects, marriages and divorces. With the 2012 presidential election two weeks away and Ohio one of the most vital states on the path to the White House, talk easily turns to politics, and the salty language flows as freely as the Miller Lite. LINK

The Washington Times' Dave Boyer: " In homestretch, Obama, Romney begin battleground blitz"President Obama lacerated Mitt Romney Monday during their third and final debate Monday, repeatedly painting his Republican rival as wrong, reckless and inconsistent in world affairs. Romney accused Obama of being ineffective on the global stage - but in a surprise, he soft-pedaled several of his differences with Obama and even agreed with the President on a host of policies.
