Nationals Vs. Rockies Preview: Washington Looking For Three Straight

In the 10 games prior to Washington's Wednesday win over the Colorado Rockies, the Nationals scored just 25 runs. The bats have apparently returned for the Nationals though, as they have scored 23 combined runs in their last two games in Colorado.

To make it three wins in a row, the Nationals will look to keep up their hot offense against Josh Outman, who has yet to earn a victory in 2012 despite five starts and appearances in 14 games. In his latest outing, Outman struggled against the Texas Rangers allowing eight hits and five earned runs before leaving the game with two outs in the fifth inning.

Pitching for the Nationals will be Edwin Jackson who is looking for his third win in four starts. In his last start, Jackson allowed four hits and one earned run in over six innings en route to a victory over the Orioles. The performance dropped Jackson's ERA under 3.00 for the first time in 2012.

The first pitch at Coors Field is scheduled to be thrown at 3:10 p.m. ET on Thursday and will be televised on MASN.

Tidal Evidence Suggests Water Sloshes Beneath Titan's Icy Crust

News | Space

New results make it clear that Saturn's moon Titan is one of the solar system's subset of large satellites with oceans

From Nature magazine

Data gathered by NASA?s Cassini probe as it repeatedly swept past Titan, Saturn?s largest moon, offers the best evidence yet that the smog-swaddled satellite has a substantial ocean of water sloshing beneath a thick icy crust.

During Titan?s 16-day orbit around Saturn, the distance between the moon and its planet ranges from slightly less than 1.19 million kilometres to almost 1.26 million km ? a disparity that generates tides that flex the moon?s surface, says Luciano Iess, a planetary scientist at the Sapienza University of Rome. Estimates of the size of those tides and their effects can provide clues about the moon?s internal structure, he explains.

Since the Cassini probe began orbiting Saturn in July 2004, the craft has flown past Titan more than 80 times. For this study, Iess and his colleagues analysed how the moon's gravity caused Cassini to speed up as it approached Titan and then slow down as it receded during six of those flybys. Because Titan occupied different spots in its orbit during each flyby, the team of researchers could use the flyby data to discern subtle variations in the moon?s gravitational field as it moved through its orbit. These variations were brought about by changes in Titan's shape ? which, in turn, were triggered by tidal flexing of the moon?s surface.

The team?s analyses suggest that the surface of the moon can rise and fall by up to 10 metres during each orbit, says Iess. That degree of warpage suggests that Titan?s interior is relatively deformable, the team reports today in Science. Several models of the moon?s internal structure suggest such flexibility ? including a model in which the moon is solid but soft and squishy throughout. But the researchers contend that the most likely model of Titan is one in which an icy shell dozens of kilometres thick floats atop a global ocean. The team's findings, together with the results of previous studies, hint that Titan?s ocean may lie no more than 100 km below the moon?s surface.

Melting middles
?This is an exciting result that puts Titan firmly in the group of large satellites with oceans,? says Robert Pappalardo, a planetary scientist at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Previously, scientists have inferred the presence of oceans beneath the icy surfaces of several satellites in the outer Solar System, including Enceladus, which is another Saturnian moon, and Europa, which orbits Jupiter.

Tidal flexing of Titan?s icy crust wouldn?t provide enough heat to keep the subsurface ocean liquid, says Jonathan Lunine, a planetary scientist at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and a co-author of the study. But the energy released by the decay of radioactive elements in the moon?s core, the chemical reactions that dehydrate many of the silicates there, and the small amounts of ammonia that may taint the ocean would help keep it from freezing, he notes.

However, such tidal flexing could serve as an explanation for why methane is present in Titan?s atmosphere, even though the gas is usually destroyed by chemical reactions driven by sunlight, says Lunine. Deposits of methane-rich ice in the upper portions of Titan?s crust could be warmed enough by the flexing to release the gas, thereby replenishing the moon?s atmospheric concentrations of the gas. This would then fall as rain into methane oceans and lakes on the surface.

?But that?s just one idea, because scientists haven?t measured near-surface concentrations of methane [on Titan] yet,? Lunine notes. ?There?s no smoking gun for where it comes from.?

That evidence could soon be at hand. The Titan Mare Explorer (TiME) mission, one of three candidates now being considered by NASA for launch later this decade, would drop a floating, instrument-laden capsule into one of the large methane seas in Titan?s northern hemisphere to study the chemical and physical processes taking place there. "So far, we've only seen things during flybys," says Lunine.

How The SCOTUS Ruling On Health Care Affects College Students

On Thursday the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the bulk of the Affordable Care Act, often referred to as the health care reform law or "Obamacare." The court found a central part of the law, the individual insurance mandate, constitutional, and Chief Justice John Roberts validated the mandate as a tax.

With health care reform free to move forward, there is some good news and some bad news for young people.

Young adults comprise the largest portion of the uninsured. This is partly because they make less money at the start of their careers, and so often forgo the purchase health insurance if they tend to be healthy and expect not to need such coverage any time soon.

Starting in 2014, though, young adults will be required to purchase health insurance or face a penalty from the federal government. They can also opt to remain on their parents' insurance plans until they reach the age of 26.

To find out more about how the Affordable Care Act affects young people, check out the slideshow below:

  • Tax Credits For Young Adults

According to the White House, the ACA "provides premium tax credits for young adults making up to roughly $43,000 a year to ensure that they can afford quality coverage in the new state-based Health Insurance Exchanges which start in 2014." If you don't make enough money to buy your own insurance, you can qualify for the hardship waiver.

  • Bans Gender Discrimination, Covers Women's Health

The ACA bans "gender rating" that allows women to be charged more for the same coverage as men. Women will also have mammograms, domestic violence screenings and birth control covered without a co-pay. And pregnancy is no longer considered a "pre-existing condition."

  • No Skipping Out On Insurance

Since the Supreme Court found the individual mandate constitutional, uninsured young, healthy people who <a href="http://swampland.time.com/2012/06/28/supreme-court-upholds-obamacare-in-landmark-decision/?iid=sl-main-lede?iid=tsmodule#ixzz1z6R1lR7c" target="_hplink">might've skipped out on buying insurance</a> will have to think again. The mandate kicks in in 2014. <em>Time</em> magazine's Swampland blog reports: <blockquote> These people often forgo insurance because they make the fairly good bet they won't incur expensive medical bills and because they don't have enough earning power to afford policies. Young Americans subject to the mandate are expected to pay more into the insurance pool than they get out, to help subsidize the cost of insuring older, sicker people. Standard insurance policies will likely be more expensive for these people under the ACA than they are now. </blockquote> However, this is also why lawmakers built in additional tax credits for young and poor people, and the law now allows 20-somethings to stay on their parents' insurance even after they graduate college -- up to the age of 26.

  • Pre-Existing Conditions

The ACA already prevents insurance companies from charging higher premiums to people under the age of 19 with pre-existing conditions. Going forward, it will forbid insurance discrimination based on pre-existing conditions for everyone, regardless of age.

  • Medical Students Get Help On Student Loans

The ACA gives <a href="http://campusprogress.org/articles/five_ways_the_affordable_care_act_helps_young_americans/" target="_hplink">financial support</a> for the $12 million National Health Services Corps Students-to-Service Loan Repayment Program, which will provide medical school graduates up to $120,000 to repay outstanding loans if they agree to work as primary care doctors in under-served communities. Campus Progress reports: <blockquote>The ACA also creates a Prevention and Public Health Fund, which will help create new positions for primary care doctors, fund training programs for physicians' assistants and nurse practitioners, and push states to invest in health care training and job creation.</blockquote>

  • The 80/20 Rule Will Improve Campus Health Plans

Most college health centers don't allow students to use outside insurance plans, however, the services they provide will improve. According to <em><a href="http://www.usnews.com/education/articles/2010/09/09/5-ways-health-reform-affects-college-students" target="_hplink">U.S. News & World Report</a></em>: <blockquote>Effective Jan. 1, 2011, all insurance plans must have a medical loss ratio that is at least 80 percent to 85 percent (depending on the plan's size). That means that at a minimum, 80 percent to 85 percent of all premiums paid by policyholders must in turn be used to provide medical care.</blockquote> Many schools had loss ratios closer to 50 percent prior to the law, but increasing that loss ratio means they're providing more through coverage. In other words, it's the "<a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/healthreform/relief-for-americans-and-businesses#young-adults" target="_hplink">80/20 rule</a>": insurance companies (and colleges providing health services) must spend at least 80 cents of your premium dollar on your health care or improvements to care. Insurance companies must also publicly justify their actions if they want to raise premiums by 10 percent or more, according to the White House. The reform law also bans insurance companies and colleges from placing lifetime caps on coverage.

  • Preventative Services Are Covered

If you're healthy and work to stay healthy, you can avoid more dramatic health issues down the line. A large number of <a href="http://www.healthcare.gov/news/factsheets/2010/07/preventive-services-list.html" target="_hplink">preventative services</a> are now covered thanks to the ACA, but a few are worth pointing out for college students: Alcohol misuse screening and counseling, Depression screening, Type 2 Diabetes screening, HIV screening, immunization vaccines, STI prevention counseling, tobacco use screening and intervention, cervical cancer screening and contraception coverage.

  • Aim To Improve LGBT Community Health

Under the ACA, there will be <a href="http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2012/03/aca_top_10_lgbt.html" target="_hplink">data collection to better understand LGBT</a> health disparities, and increases the National Health Service Corps, which offers LGBT cultural-competence training to corps members through the Department of Health & Human Services.

  • Young People Can Stay On Their Parents' Insurance To Age 26

Prior to the Affordable Care Act, <a href="http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/health/dependent-health-coverage-state-implementation.aspx" target="_hplink">37 states provided</a> some form of this type of coverage for young adults -- some more generous than others. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services estimated in 2010 that this portion of the bill <a href="http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2012/01/aca_success.html" target="_hplink">affects 2.37 million people</a>, of which 1.83 million were uninsured.

PFT: Irvin equates Romo's pressure to LeBron's

118998553_crop_650x440Getty Images

It?s officially time to break out the Deux Deux Deuxs.

ESPN has announced that Chris Berman and Trent Dilfer will call the second game of the season-opening Monday Night Football doubleheader, when the Raiders host the Chargers.

The official announcement includes a ?podcast? from Berman, who likely still thinks that term is a reference to the film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in which he explains how the decision came to be.

?Our president John Skipper, our executive V.P. of production John Wildhack, we were together, and midway through an interesting evening they said, ?We?d like you to call the second Monday night game,?? Berman says.

?I went, ?Now, wow.? There?s something I never really thought about.?? Of course, I?ve thought about calling NFL games my whole life, but given what I do and Sunday duties, the normal ones, and it?s Week One of the season and you get your hands full and we?re all excited and we?re trying to do our best in the studio, etc.? I didn?t see it coming.

?I said, ?I gotta give you guys credit.? So, you understand I haven?t called a football game in a while, although I?ve called many baseball games and U.S. Open golf, etc., etc.? I was really surprised and excited about hearing it, to be honest with you.? Really excited.? It?s nice to be surprised after 32 years, it really is.?

This explanation implies that Berman had done no lobbying whatsoever for the gig.? Which some people will believe, and plenty of people won?t.

To get ready for the regular-season assignment, Berman and Dilfer will handle the Titans-Cardinals game on August 23.

Per ESPN, Berman will host Sunday NFL Countdown on Week One, then fly to Oakland to prepare for the Monday night game.? There?s no specific word yet on who will replace Berman for The Blitz, Berman?s SportsCenter-embedded review of game highlights with Tom Jackson.

And that?s perhaps the real news.? For the first time in a quarter-century, someone other than Berman will get the opportunity to narrate the extended highlights packages from the games of the Sunday that was.? To give up those reins, Berman must have really wanted to get in to the booth.

UPDATE 10:50 a.m. ET:? ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer says that the host of The Blitz has not yet been determined.? With Berman absent, Suzy Kolber will host Monday Night Countdown from Bristol.

Everything I Know About Marketing I Learned From My Dog

Author: Tracy DeYoung ? | ? June 27th, 2012

It?s true. My dog, Jake, is a marketing genius!

I?m serious. This dog could convince you to buy a popsicle in the middle of an Alaskan blizzard. He has me trained to walk him in the middle of a rain storm on a muddy path battling hordes of mosquitos while running a fever of 102.

My dog Jake is the king of? persuasion and I do what he commands.

Now imagine if you?re prospects did the same. Imagine if when you wanted them to go to your website they did, of if you wanted them to call you they did, or when you wanted them to sign up for your services or buy your products they did ? as you commanded.

The truth is marketing is just that, training your prospects to respond, training them to call you and training them to spend money with you.

Marketing and selling involve just two things.

Stimulus and response. That?s it.

Once you understand how simple it is you can use the idea to train your customers to buy, the same way my dog Jake has trained me to attend to his needs, even in the dead of winter or during a summer rainstorm.

So, if it?s so easy, then why do most small business owners fail?

They lack a training program, I mean marketing plan for training customers to buy.

Now if you?re a dog and you want to train your owner, it?s simple. When you want something, say to go out in the yard, you can sit by the back door, bark or start running around in circles. And when you do, your owner responds.

And once you?ve learned how to get your owner?s attention, you just do the same thing every time and he or she will respond.

Or if you?re a pet owner and you want to turn the tables and train your dog, you do the same thing ? you reward them with a treat or a pat for doing the right thing until they learn the behavior you?re after.

Same in marketing.

Make a list of each behavior you want to train your ideal clients to demonstrate and then think of what stimulus you can provide to get them to take action, again and again.

Of course, the first step is to train them to read your content, your web content, your emails, etc. Then you can train them to watch your videos, and finally once they know you, like you and trust you, train them to buy from you.

A word to the wise. Don?t use doggie treats. Do use killer headlines, tips and ideas, free reports, free video tutorials, and irresistible offers. Here?s how >>

Once you realize how simple marketing is, that it?s just a matter of providing the right stimulus, you?ll get the response you want, and your business will take off.

Whoops! Got to go, my dog Jake says it?s time for his morning walk.

Remember those educational cassettes that you?d supposedly learn from overnight? Well, scientific evidence says they're bunk?unless you listen to them while you?re up during the night, that is.

But if you?re actually sleeping and you play something that you've already learned, like a piano melody you've been practicing, you may indeed master it more quickly. So says a study in the journal Nature Neuroscience. [James Antony et al, Cued memory reactivation during sleep influences skill learning, link to come]

Researchers asked volunteers?with and without musical experience?to learn a few random melodies on a computer keyboard.? Then the subjects took a 90-minute nap. When they slipped into slow wave sleep?a stage previously shown to be associated with memory processing?the researchers softly played back one of the two melodies.

After the subjects woke up, they were able to both melodies more accurately?the helpful effects of a little shuteye, the researchers say. But the volunteers did even better on the ditty they'd heard while snoozing, suggesting sensorimotor skills can be fine-tuned by exposure during sleep.

The scientists stress that the procedure is no shortcut to becoming Scott Joplin?you still have to put in effort while awake. But a little sleep-time study may help you change your tune for the better.

Egypt's Morsi: Bloodshed will not be in vain

After winning Egypt's presidential election, Mohammed Morsi claims to have quit the Muslim Brotherhood. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Cairo, Egypt.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated at 4:05 p.m. ET: CAIRO -? Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood-backed candidate, was declared Egypt?s first Islamist president on Sunday with 51.7 percent of last weekend's run-off vote, defeating Ahmed Shafiq, who had been tapped as prime minister by former President Hosni Mubarak.

In an address to Egyptians late Sunday night, Morsi reiterated his platform of unifying all Egyptians. Of those who died while protesting more than a year ago, he said, "Their blood will not go in vain."

Morsi becomes Egypt?s fifth president, following Mubarak, who was president for nearly 30 years before mass protests across the country forced him to resign in February 2011.

The announcement by the state election committee Sunday touched off a jubilant celebration in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands of Brotherhood supporters had gathered in 97-degree heat. The crowd waved national flags and chanted "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great!"

Morsi?will be sworn in on July 1, according to the election timetable.

His victory followed?speculation about backroom deals and suspected interference by the ruling military council in determining the outcome in favor of Shafiq, Mubarak?s prime minister.

In his speech Sunday night, Morsi said that contrary to popular belief, he was grateful to the police, whom he called his "brothers and children." He said he would rely on them to maintain "security from the inside."

Supporters of Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, protest against Egypt's military rulers in Tahrir Square on Saturday.

Morsi, who received an engineering degree from the University of Southern California in the early 1980s according to media reports, was a last-minute candidate, chosen to represent the Brotherhood after their preferred choice was disqualified.

On the campaign trail, he promised to institute Islamic law. One of his supporters, cleric Safwat el-Hegazy, issued a direct challenge to Israel, calling for a Muslim super-state across the Middle East with Jerusalem as its capital.

Morsi, 60, distanced himself from the cleric?s comments, but they trailed him on the campaign despite his assertion that he will respect international treaties, including the 1979 peace accord, on which much U.S. aid depends. He said he will not, however, meet with Israeli officials, according to the BBC.

He has also pledged to form an inclusive government to appeal to the many Egyptians, including a large Christian minority worried about potential religious rule. He has repeated that he would maintain his independence from the Brotherhood and not turn Egypt into a theocracy.

Morsi won the first round ballot in May with less than a quarter of the vote.

NBC Foreign Correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Tahrir Square.

There were some isolated scuffles in parts of Cairo between rival groups on Sunday. Several hundred Shafiq supporters in the middle-class suburb of Nasr City chanted "Save Egypt! The Brotherhood will destroy it!'' while soldiers tried to keep traffic moving.

The military council will retain control of the biggest army in the Middle East, whose closest ally is the United States.?

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads the military council that has ruled Egypt for more than 16 months, congratulated the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate after his presidential election win was confirmed, state television reported.?The report, made in a brief headline, did not give further details.

Morsi "will likely face foot-dragging and perhaps outright attempts to undermine his initiatives from key institutions," Elijah Zarwan, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in Cairo. "Faced with such resistance, frustration may tempt him fall into the trap of attempting to throw his new weight around. This would be a mistake. His challenge is to lead a bitterly divided, fearful, and angry population toward a peaceful democratic outcome, without becoming a reviled scapegoat for continued military rule."

Egyptians fill Cairo's Tahrir Square in anticipation of a new government being announced. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Egypt's ruling armed forces were on alert on Sunday as fears of violence mounted in the final hours before the state election committee named the winner.

Sunday's result -- 500 days after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak -- is historic for the Middle East, but will not end power struggles between the army, Islamists and others over Egypt's future.

The generals, who oversaw Mubarak's departure, have repeatedly said, both to Egyptians and to their close U.S. ally, that they will return to barracks and hand over to civilian rule. But they present themselves as guardians of Egypt's security and long-term interests and moved to block the Islamists from taking more than a share of power.

The military has held power in Egypt for nearly 60 years since the revolution to overthrow a dynasty.

Iran's Foreign Ministry congratulated Egyptians on Sunday for Morsi's victory, saying Egypt was in the final stages of an "Islamic Awakening."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s office released a statement saying he "appreciates the democratic process in Egypt and respects its outcome."

"Israel expects continue cooperation with the Egyptian administration on the basis of the peace accord between the two countries, which is in the interest of the two peoples and contributes to regional stability,'' the statement said.

The son of a peasant farmer, Morsi has spoken of a simple childhood in a village in the Nile Delta province of Sharqia, recalling how his mother taught him prayer and the Koran. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1982 after studying at Cairo University.?

Following his studies in the United States, he returned to Egypt in 1985. Two of his five children hold U.S. citizenship.?

Kris Jenner Put Kim On The Pill At 14

Kris Jenner was on the Bethenny show where she talked about raising her kids, and putting Kim on birth control at 14. Go ahead and judge, but I am pretty sure there would have been a grandbaby Kardashian a whole lot sooner had she not. Lets face it, Kim is a very sexual person. I mean that is really why she is famous in the first place. So honestly Kris talking about putting Kimmy on the pill at 14 is not that shocking. In fact I will say it is responsible parenting. She says Kim came to hr and told her she was ?feeling sexual.? What was she supposed to do? Give her the abstinence talk? I mean sure, do that too, but when a kid is ready, there is pretty much no stopping them. I give her props for having such an open relationship with her kids. That is wonderful that her kids feel comfortable enough to talk to her about that kid of stuff at such a young age. Kris, who bless her heart has five girls, says it has happened for each daughter at a different age, but the response is the same: I drive as fast [...]

'General Hospital' wins big with 5 Daytime Emmys

The Daytime Emmys showered "General Hospital" with five trophies, including best drama, while giving Regis Philbin a fond farewell as a departing talk-show host.

NBC's "Today" show won as best morning show and the syndicated "Jeopardy!" was named best game show at the annual ceremony Saturday.

"Live with Regis and Kelly" was saluted as best entertainment talk show (its first-ever nod in that category) and for best talk-show hosts. Philbin ended his long run as its co-host last November, with a replacement yet to be named to join Kelly Ripa as the syndicated series continues.

Heather Tom, who won as best lead actress for CBS' "The Bold and the Beautiful," made history as the first to win in that category after having previously won as both best younger actress and supporting actress.

Anthony Geary won as lead actor for "General Hospital." The ABC soap also won for supporting actress (Nancy Lee Grahn), supporting actor (Jonathan Jackson), and directing team.

The syndicated "Dr. Oz" was named best informative talk show.

Bill Geddie, longtime associate of Barbara Walters and executive producer of her ABC talk show "The View," received the life achievement award.

"There's not a lot of glamour and glory in daytime," Geddie told the room in his acceptance remarks. "But when you think about it, we're all here with the best of intentions: We just love making TV!"

Held in Beverly Hills, Calif., the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards was telecast on the HLN channel, having moved to cable for the first time after airing on CBS the past two years. The awards are bestowed by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The Beverly Hilton, where the presentation originated, was the site only hours earlier of what investigators believe was a murder-suicide. Police responding to a report of a shooting late Friday found a man and a woman dead from gunshot wounds in a guest room. The luxury hotel was also the site of Whitney Houston's death in February, when the singer drowned in the bathtub of her room.

Debt Settlement Timeline

If you are in need of debt help, seeking out the services of a debt settlement company may seem like a logical choice. When you complete a debt settlement, it can help you avoid paying any large portion of what you owe to your creditors. In this situation, you may be interested in finding out how long the debt settlement process takes and what steps are involved.
Understanding this information can give you the perspective you need to make a decision on whether to pursue this approach.

When You Have a Lump Sum
If you have a lump sum of money to use for a debt settlement, the process will be completed very quickly. Creditors are willing to accept a debt settlement when they can get a lump sum of money to pay off the account. They will then write off the rest of the amount that you owe and you will not be responsible for paying that portion. If you have a lump sum ready to offer and the creditor accepts, the settlement process can be completed in a few days. You or your debt settlement lawyer will contact the creditor and negotiate the settlement.
This can usually be done in one session, depending on whether the creditor is willing to work with you. At that point, you will need to send payment to the creditor. It may take a few days to get the payment to the creditor and have it processed. After the payment is processed, the creditor will record the payment and finalize your account. In this situation, you can typically get the whole thing handled fairly fast.

When You Don't Have a Lump Sum
In some situations, you may not have a lump sum to offer to the creditor. When this happens, the process can take a little bit longer to complete. If you seek out the services of a debt settlement lawyer, he may recommend setting up a savings account and putting aside a sum of money every month to go toward the debt settlement. Once the account reaches a certain point, then the debt settlement lawyer can negotiate a settlement with your creditors. While you are saving the money, the debt help company or lawyer may recommend that you stop paying your bill in the meantime. Then the creditor will be more likely to accept the debt settlement when it is offered.

If you use this approach to pay off your debt, it could take several months or years to build up enough money to settle the debt. The amount of time that it will take depends on how long it will take you to save the necessary money. It also varies depending on how much money you can set aside every month.

If your debt is astronomical and it would take you many years to come up with enough money to settle, a debt help lawyer can advise as to your legal rights regarding creditors and collectors. If you are represented by a debt settlement attorney all communication from debt collectors and creditors included in the settlement must be sent or directed to your debt help attorney rather than you.

South African daffodils may be a future treatment for depression

ScienceDaily (June 22, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered that plant compounds from a South African flower may in time be used to treat diseases originating in the brain -- including depression. At the University of Copenhagen, a number of these substances have now been tested in a laboratory model of the blood-brain barrier.

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen have previously documented that substances from the South African plant species Crinum and Cyrtanthus -- akin to snowdrops and daffodils -- have an effect on the mechanisms in the brain that are involved in depression. This research has now yielded further results, since a team based at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences has recently shown how several South African daffodils contain plant compounds whose characteristics enable them to negotiate the defensive blood-brain barrier that is a key challenge in all new drug development.

"Several of our plant compounds can probably be smuggled past the brain's effective barrier proteins. We examined various compounds for their influence on the transporter proteins in the brain. This study was made in a genetically-modified cell model of the blood-brain barrier that contains high levels of the transporter P-glycoprotein. Our results are promising, and several of the chemical compounds studied should therefore be tested further, as candidates for long-term drug development," says Associate Professor Birger Brodin.

"The biggest challenge in medical treatment of diseases of the brain is that the drug cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier. The blood vessels of the brain are impenetrable for most compounds, one reason being the very active transporter proteins. You could say that the proteins pump the drugs out of the cells just as quickly as they are pumped in. So it is of great interest to find compounds that manage to 'trick' this line of defence."

The results of the study have been published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.

It will nonetheless be a long time before any possible new drug reaches our pharmacy shelves: "This is the first stage of a lengthy process, so it will take some time before we can determine which of the plant compounds can be used in further drug development," says Birger Brodin.

Yet this does not curb his enthusiasm for the opportunities from the interdisciplinary cooperation with organic scientists from the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology and the Natural History Museum of Denmark.

"In my research group, we have had a long-term focus on the body's barrier tissue -- and in recent years particularly the transport of drug compounds across the blood-brain barrier. More than 90 per cent of all potential drugs fail the test by not making it through the barrier, or being pumped out as soon as they do get in. Studies of natural therapies are a valuable source of inspiration, giving us knowledge that can also be used in other contexts," Birger Brodin emphasises.

Android app swipes contactless credit card details

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

rexfeatures_254189e.jpg(Image: Andrew Drysdale/Rex Features)

Got a credit card equipped with a contactless payment chip? Then watch out next time someone bumps into you in the street - they may have just mugged you with an app.

Contactless cards use near field communications (NFC) chips to exchange your payment details with a merchant's till, and some smartphones also come equipped with NFC chips to let you use them as a wallet. Now security researcher Thomas Skora has written an app that turns any NFC phone into a reader and successfully read card numbers, expiry dates, transactions and merchant IDs from German credit cards.

The app, called paycardreader, was removed from the Google Play store yesterday, but Skora has also placed the source code on GitHub, a code-sharing website, and says the app doesn't actually save the swiped data, it just displays it.

It is possible that more malicious app developers could use similar methods to actively steal data though - an investigation by Channel 4 television in the UK earlier this year revealed it was possible to swipe details via a phone and use them to make purchases on Amazon.
