Hardcore computer tinkerers will find a lot to like in CoconutBattery 2.7.3, a free Mac app that serves up lots of relevant information about your Apple machine's battery. It's a passive experience?the app simply displays relevant battery information?but if you geek out on such knowledge, it's a must-have download.
The CoconutBattery Experience
Here's how to use CoconutBattery: you download the app. That's it! The software auto-launches after installation and displays information about your Mac's battery. CoconutBattery 2.7.3 displays not only the current battery charge and the maximum battery charge, but current battery capacity and design capacity, as well.
CoconutBattery 2.7.3 shows additional details such as your Mac's model (it recognized my computer as "MacBookAir5.2"), number of loadcycles (the total number of times the battery's received a full charge), battery temperature, battery power usage, and computer age. These are welcome additions to what could've been a very barebones app that could've very easily only served up battery charge data.
This can proves handy if you want concrete evidence that your Mac's battery isn?t function as it should. Running this app may be useful to determine when you should purchase a new battery?if you have a Mac with a replaceable battery, of course.
So what's to dislike? Not much, really. CoconutBattery does what it's designed to do?display battery information. Still, the app did drop the ball in one area?updating the software. CoconutBattery alerted me to an available update, but it failed to fetch it twice when I initiated the download. The update worked on the third try, however.
Cracking the Coconut
CoconutBattery isn't an app for everyone, but if you're in need of a battery measurement tool, it's worth a look as it installs quickly and delivers lots of information. The app displays some quirks when it comes to updating the software, but that issue doesn't sully the overall experience.
