Severe thunderstorms begin rumbling through the state; forecasters warn of tornado

Severe thunderstorms swept across Massachusetts this afternoon, pounding it with heavy rain, hail, and lightning. The storms flooded roadways and knocked down tree limbs and power lines, leaving more than 23,000 people without power. Several fires were started after apparent lightning strikes on buildings.

An elderly couple?s car was stuck in the flooding in Malden.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., National Weather Service radar showed the storms easing out of the Boston area and southern and southeastern Massachusetts, as well as Cape Cod, on their way to the east, out to sea.

But weather service meteorologist Lance Franck said that may not be the end of the story. A second line of storms is approaching the state from the west.

?I wouldn?t underestimate them,? he said. ?There is the potential for more severe weather.?

At 2:04 p.m., the National Weather Service warned of a thunderstorm capable of spawning a tornado near Lynn, just north of Boston, but the warning was quickly canceled.

The entire state is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m., the weather service said. It began issuing thunderstorm warnings early this afternoon as its Doppler radar picked up cloudbursts capable of producing high winds and damaging hail in various parts of the state, including the North Shore, Boston, the South Shore, and Cape Cod.

State Police said the North Shore experienced roadway flooding in several locations, including Route 1 at Exit 114 in Peabody, which was under two feet of water.

The Nahant-Lynn rotary and Lynnway at Commercial Street also flooded, and the Nahant Causeway had standing water, as did Route 1 southbound at Route 60, State Police said.

They urged North Shore motorists to use caution and avoid roads in flooded areas.

Some Lynn streets were flooded and some tree limbs and power lines were reported down. Multiple lightning strikes were reported in the area, including one that sparked a roof fire, a police dispatcher said.

A Swampscott police dispatcher said the town was experiencing flooding in the usual low-lying places, including the train station, but that the areas were draining as the rain stopped.

In Malden, multiple cars stalled out on Route 99 after driving over a large puddle on one stretch, and traffic was backed up for about a mile at about 3:15 p.m.

A deep puddle nearly 50 feet wide, which locals blamed on overwhelmed storm drains, had amassed in the afternoon in the parking lot of the Town Line mobile home park. Many residents were forced to move their cars as the waters rose in their parking spots, and hail had damaged several vehicles, residents said.

?It rained so hard and fast that the drain couldn?t keep up,? said Domenic Vinti, 70. ?I?ve never seen it this bad. This was awful.?

Ed Bryan, 56, said the flooding in the parking lot, which spread to front entrances of some homes, was nothing new. ?This has been happening since the 1950s,? Bryan said. ?When it comes it looks like a river. It?s a couple hours of hell. ?

The car a Globe correspondent was driving in Chelsea was pummeled by golf-ball-sized hail, cracking the windshield.

In Boston?s Dorchester section, lightning struck the attic of a three-story home on Milton Avenue at about 3:30 p.m., the Boston Fire Department tweeted. There were no injuries, but several people were displaced and damage was estimated at $50,000.

At around the same time in Roslindale, lighting struck a transformer on Averton Street, according to a Boston Police Department tweet. There were downed power lines but no injuries were reported, police said.

South of Boston, a Scituate police dispatcher said the town experienced power outages and trees down, but no major problems. A Weymouth police lieutenant said one tree was knocked down, but ?nothing outrageous.?

In Duxbury, weather-related problems shut down the 911 call system in the afternoon for a brief period.

?I think we were able to rectify that fairly quickly,? said Fire Captain John Guilderson. He said that as of about 5 p.m., the town had not experienced any severe flooding but had seen lightning and heavy rain. No weather-related injuries had been reported.

?Fortunately not,? Guilderson said.

A Rockland fire dispatcher said lightning sparked two fires there but declined to comment further.

Airports across the Northeast were impacted by storms, and flights at Logan International Airport experienced delays of up to one hour and 45 minutes. The FAA said airports in New York City, Newark, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., were experiencing weather-related delays.

National Grid reported about 20,000 people out of power in the midafternoon, mostly on the North Shore. Spokeswoman Charlotte McCormack said extra crews had been brought in before the storm and expected restoration times ranged from 4:45 p.m. to 7 p.m.

NSTAR spokesman Michael Durand said there were about 3,000 customers across the service area without power. He said NSTAR officials were monitoring the weather and were unsure when power will be restored.

Forecasters said earlier today that areas south of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Massachusetts would likely be hit the hardest.

Meteorologist Charlie Foley said once the storms pass through, the cold front will leave behind a beautiful weekend for New England residents.

?The big thing is that this frontal passage will mark the end of the hot and humid air mass that we?ve been experiencing,? making way for refreshing and comfortable weather, Foley said.

There will be lots of sun and low humidity starting Thursday and continuing through Sunday. Daytime temperatures will be in the low 80s, dipping into the 70s on Friday. Nights will be pleasant, with temperatures in the low 60s.

John R. Ellement of the Globe staff and contributed to this report.

Everything You Need to Know About Shell Oil and Arctic Offshore Drilling in Alaska

It's Exploratory Drilling

Royal Dutch Shell isn't really planning to drill for oil this summer; it wants to drill for data. The company will cap and permanently abandon any wells it drills before the sea ice returns. The company had planned to drill as many as two wells in the Beaufort Sea and three wells in the Chukchi Sea. (The Beaufort stretches to the north and east of Point Barrow, which lies in the center of the north Alaska coast, while the Chukchi is to the northwest.) However, unusually extensive ice in the Bering Sea this year means that even if the necessary permits are granted, drilling will being delayed and fewer wells completed.

Shell's ships are now gathering at Unalaska in the Aleutian Islands. One drill ship, the Noble Discoverer, dragged anchor and drifted perilously close to shore on July 14, heightening concerns among opponents of drilling.

Oil Companies Drilled Here in the 1980s and '90s

This isn't the first drilling in America's corner of the Arctic Ocean. Around 30 offshore wells were drilled in the U.S. portion of the Beaufort Sea in the 1980s and early '90s, and five in the Chukchi. (Details can be found here.) Some oil production already takes place on artificial islands in the Beaufort Sea. For instance, BP has operated the Endicott site in 14 feet of water, and the Northstar operation in 39 feet of water, for decades. (An overview of BP's operations in the area is here.) None of the wells previously drilled farther from the coast resulted in oil or gas production, mainly because the price of oil dropped roughly in half from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. Drilling in the Arctic is economical only when the price of oil is high.

Local People Depend on Subsistence Whaling

The 7500 Inupiat and others who live along the northern coast are heavily dependent on marine mammals, including whales, for food. A polluted Chukchi or Beaufort sea could destroy the backbone of their culture and devastate family budgets. Fresh food hunted at sea in an age-old tradition is a lot more palatable to locals than exorbitantly priced, shrink-wrapped food brought in by plane.

On the other hand, oil revenue from Prudhoe Bay helps to fund plumbing, electricity, medical services, and schools in the North Slope Borough. Prudhoe Bay's oil output was only 205 million barrels last year, down by more than two-thirds from its peak of 722 million in 1988. Just like the Alaska state government, local government bodies need oil money. But most Inupiat would be far less worried about drilling in ANWR or the National Petroleum Reserve than in the ocean. (Gwich'in Athabascans, who rely more on caribou for subsistence, may feel differently.)

Oil Spills Aren't the Only Risk

An oil spill is the greatest danger, but the Inupiat hunters also worry about noise pollution. Bowhead whales, in particular, are highly vocal creatures with astounding hearing, according to Craig George, a biologist who has spent 30-plus years living in Barrow and studying whales. "Bowheads live in an acoustic world far more than in a visual world," he says. The whales can communicate across 20 miles of ocean and have been shown to avoid industrial noises at nearly that distance. Inupiat will venture a few dozen miles offshore in open boats to hunt the whales; if the animals moved farther offshore to avoid noise, the hunts would become even more dangerous and perhaps impossible.

The Wells Will be in Shallow Water

The proposed wells are all in 150 feet of water or less, and according to Shell geologist Steve Phelps, any oil would likely be found 7000 to 10,000 feet below the seafloor. The figures vary with location. (In comparison, the Gulf of Mexico's Deepwater Horizon accident in 2010 took place in 5000 feet of water, in a well that stretched about 13,000 feet below the seafloor.) Commercial production of oil would lie a decade in the future.

This is Just the Start of Offshore Development

While only Shell would potentially drill this summer, ConocoPhillips is gearing up for the 2014 drilling season. The federal government plans to hold lease sales for additional sites in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, probably starting in 2016.

Oil-Spill Response Would be Difficult

Neither the Coast Guard nor the offshore oil industry has permanent infrastructure in the Arctic Ocean to respond to emergencies. The Coast Guard's big C-130 Hercules planes take off from Air Station Kodiak, about 820 nautical miles to the south. The closest deepwater port is in Unalaska, or Dutch Harbor, the Aleutian Islands community made famous by the Discovery Channel show Deadliest Catch. The distance from there to Point Barrow is 1280 nautical miles. These distances worry opponents of drilling, especially given the slow response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. They reason that if corporations couldn't get drilling right in the heart of the offshore oil industry, they don't stand a chance in the remote and forbidding Arctic.

Lisa Speer, international oceans program director at the National Resources Defense Council, has likened an oil-spill in the Gulf of Mexico to a heart attack in a big New York City teaching hospital: The emergency resources are at hand. "In contrast," she says, "there's very little capability for offshore spill response" in the Arctic.

However, Shell would be bringing oil-spill response vessels to the drilling sites. The company argues that it could therefore respond to an accident faster than companies working in other parts of the globe.

In reality, it's hard to clean up an oil spill anywhere, and the Arctic is no exception. A study of Arctic oil-spill clean-up techniques was published by SINTEF, a Norwegian research organization, in 2010. Researchers found it most effective to burn the oil as it floated on the surface of the water. Mechanical recovery of oil was difficult; ice coverage of 10 to 20 percent interfered with the use of booms. The research was funded by Shell and other oil companies; the results are here.

Picking Plants That Require Little Maintenance For Your Landscape

Does your home appear dull and uninteresting? If that is the case, you might want to consider doing some landscaping. Landscaping can do a lot for a home that is old, making it come alive with beauty. Read the following article for vital landscaping advice.

If you?ve got a big shade tree in the yard, it won?t be easy to put flowers underneath. Try using ground cover in the place of flowers. This is easy to maintain and adds a nice look to the yard. Hosta and sweet woodruff are some ground covering options.

Do not overlook the impact certain kinds of landscaping could have on your home and yard. Any disregard for this can result in plants that affect piping underground, or even block the visibility of traffic near your home. Before carrying out a landscaping project, think carefully about this and what you want to plant.

Many people forget that much of their landscaping planning and shopping can be done online. However, shopping online is simpler to do for many reasons and also provides better prices and more variety at times.

The key to landscaping on a budget is breaking each project down into small, attainable phases. Nothing is bad about scheduling your project during certain seasons. This helps you budget your money wisely. Start by writing down what goals you want to accomplish first, and then get to it.

Edging is good for your yard and your landscaping project?s visual appeal. Use this technique to make things look more professional. Regular upkeep of your yard should always include edging where the mulch and grass meet each other.

When planning your landscape design, allow room for plants to grow. A tiny tree looks cute right next to the foundation, but after a few years, it will be way too close to your house. Think about the full size of anything you think of planting so there is the right kind of balance between all the plants.

If you want to improve your landscaping but don?t have loads of extra cash to spend, think about sharing the costs with your neighbors. Neighborhood cost sharing consists of having a group of friendly neighbors putting money together to buy tools. The tools, for example a high-quality lawnmower or a leaf blower, are then shared by all of the neighbors. You can create a schedule that says who uses what equipment at a specific time.

Always consider the climate when determining which plants you will be using. You may love a certain plant or tree, if it needs elements such as a frost to grow, you may be disappointed if your area is under the frost line. Also keep in mind the amount of sunlight a plant needs, your local wind conditions, and levels of rainfall in your area.

Seek the help of a landscaping professional before starting a big project. You may have to accept the upfront expense in order to save greater amounts down the road. A 60-minute discussion should be sufficient to glean some great advice and get off on the proper foot.

Landscaping does not only include the planting of trees and grasses. To add substance and texture, look for ways to add cement, wood or iron structures. Pergolas, archways and water features create visually striking elements in any landscape design. These things come in various price ranges that can fit anyone?s budget.

Remember that it is okay to remove any plants from the yard. Sometimes when you plant something, when it grows fully it doesn?t work anymore in your space. Taking it out might actually enhance the look of your landscaping and leave a space better filled by another plant. You could try putting the removed plants in a different area or giving it away.

Do your landscaping in measured phases. Most people can?t afford to buy all the supplies they need for the entire project at one time. So design your project in phases, this way you can budget your money properly. This way you are not paying interest on a credit card or a loan as you work on your landscaping plan. It also allows for changes to be done at various stages of the project.

Look to purchase online to get the best prices and biggest selections. There are quite a few online garden centers that sell excellent items, and typically the price is much cheaper than at a store! Make sure you check out customer reviews to see if you are getting products that are handled with care and come on time. Look at various websites and compare prices.

Ponds and fountains are great additions to your landscape design. Wildlife such as frogs are often attracted to water features, which can bring about a soothing chorus of frogs each evening! You just need to exercise caution when you select your fountain, because it is likely to require a nearby electricity source.

Your home can stand out for being a beautiful property now that you?ve learned so much from this article. You could possess a vibrant looking house similar to the ones you see in the movies. Just utilize the tips from this article and soon your property will begin to come alive.

NeverSeconds: Soup not smoothie.

Hello, y?all!
It?s CJ again writing from Texas Tech University!
Today I made a REALLY BIG breakfast at home before I headed over to the campus. (They say everything is bigger in Texas? I know the portions are!)
Since I had so much food this morning, I had a smoothie for lunch, which was a nice meal substitute. Do smoothies go by different names in different countries? I never thought about that until today.
It came from a little gelato place in our Student Union Building called ?Cold Corner.?
My smoothie was called the ?Strawberry Safari.? (They all have fun names like that on the menu.)
It was made with: orange sorbetto, apple juice, raspberries, strawberries, bananas, a yogurt base, and ice. They put all the ingredients in a blender until the ice is smooth, like slush.
It was quite good, and since it was very hot here today (mid 90s Fahrenheit), it was wonderfully cool as well!
Here are my ratings?

Food-o-meter: 9/10 (It?s very sweet, so not 100% healthy.)
Mouthfuls: 36 (sips and gulps!)
Courses: (Drinkable) Main
Price: $4.32 US or ?2.76
Pieces of Hair: 0 (unless they got blended in and I didn't know?)
Guns Up: 2!
I am so excited to see the progress on the kitchen in Malawi! I hope y?all remember to keep supporting Mary?s Meals over the summer!

Best,
CJ

Dear Calamity Jane,

I have been cycling all day. It's fun going downhill but very hard going up. I even cycled down some steps. It was very bumpy and I have mud on my legs. I had a big breakfast as well. I had fruit with yoghurt and cereal. I was hungry at lunchtime and I don't think a smoothie would have helped me get back on my bike. Here's my lunch.

It is a roll that we made at the picnic table. It's a Lancashire 'bottom of the oven' muffin and in it I had some pepper and onion soft cheese. I also had a little cake and some fruit and nuts. The grapes were very nice and not crushed in Mum's rucksack. I was still thirsty after I had finished my water.

Food-o-meter- 8/10
Mouthfuls- 41
Courses- Picnic!
Health Rating- 6/10 but I was cycling!
Price- ?
Pieces of hair- 0

I don't think a smoothie is a proper lunch. Please please please have a good lunch tomorrow. If you want to drink your lunch please have some soup.

Tomorrow I am cycling to a castle where they filmed Harry Potter.

Thanks,

VEG

Where's my Windsurfer? Athletes bring tons of bags

LONDON (AP) ? Kenneth Andreasen, the head coach for the U.S. Olympic sailing team, is not a man who travels lightly. He's already sent 10 shipping containers full of sailboats, motor boats, masts, sails, trailers and other marine equipment to the Olympic sailing center at Weymouth.

Andreasen and his team of 16 sailors and assorted coaches are arriving Monday morning at Heathrow Airport with what can only be described as gobs more luggage. He will have plenty of company ? Monday is crunch time for Olympic arrivals at Europe's busiest airport because that's the day the Athletes Village opens at London's Olympic Park.

"We go through a lot of sails. We bring them on the plane," Andreasen told The Associated Press by telephone from Portsmouth, Rhode Island. "Windsurfers can be checked in as baggage, too."

The very topic of luggage can send regular airline passengers into apoplectic fits. How much more anxiety, then, for Olympic athletes who are sending everything from horses to bikes to vaulting poles to an island nation to pursue their lifelong dreams?

Officials at Heathrow are well aware that losing or breaking the bags of high-profile athletes could be a public relations disaster, and they have geared up to ensure that doesn't happen.

"We are expecting a lot of teams and a lot of bags," acknowledged Nick Cole, who heads the Olympic project for Heathrow. "We are going to be on show on Monday."

The airport usually handles 100,000 to 110,000 arrivals a day, but that will swell to 120,000 on Monday, many of them Olympic VIPs. Another big arrival day will be July 25, two days before the games' opening ceremony.

In response, Heathrow has recruited 1,000 Olympic volunteers clad in bright pink to help and created special teams to deal with oversize items such as javelins and bikes. Hundreds of immigration agents will be on the job to ease the long queues that have plagued the airport of late. Rows of Olympic VIP buses will be waiting to whisk teams and coaches to the Athletes Village.

At least, that's the plan. Cole promises it will also be the reality.

"We've got into our battle rhythm," he said.

Peter Nicholas, 59, from Camberley, south of London, is one of those Heathrow volunteers, happily working shifts that can start as early as 4:30 a.m. He already has helped the head of the Swedish Olympic committee.

"It's a once-in-the-lifetime experience," he said. "We're helping to make the games work."

Luggage is a constant worry for top athletes flying around the world.

"Most of our sailors have two to three boats that we ship around the world for competitions. Sometimes it takes a couple of months," Andreasen said. He estimated the U.S. sailing team has brought "50-60 boats, I'm not quite sure" to Britain, including about 10 motorized coaching boats.

But his team still needs to take enormous amounts of sailing gear on the plane. They are athletes who get soaked for hours each day and need specialized clothing to protect them from the chill of the ocean and the constant abrasions that come with high-stakes racing.

In all, the sailors face up to 26 days of sodden clothing, beginning when they reach Weymouth, in southwest England, on Tuesday through daily practices on the water and then battling for medals in races from July 29 until Aug. 11, the day before the London Olympics end.

The American sailors already have spent weeks practicing in the waters off Weymouth, where Andreasen says they got to experience Britain's soggy spring ? the wettest June on record ? for themselves.

"Everyone said "It never rains this much!'" he laughed. "Maybe all this bad weather will go away and it will be blue sky for the whole Olympics."

Maybe, but he's not counting on it.

"Weymouth is going to be a good venue for us," Andreasen predicted. "We are ready for anything, not taking for granted that it (the weather) will be one way or the other."

Felix dominates Darvish, strikes out 12

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:36 a.m. ET July 15, 2012

SEATTLE (AP) - Felix Hernandez dominated the Texas Rangers again on Saturday night.

Hernandez allowed three singles and struck out 12 in Seattle's 7-0 win Saturday.

"Those guys are dangerous," Hernandez said. "Just tried to throw on the corners."

Hernandez leads the majors in strikeouts with 140.

In two starts against the Rangers this season, he's allowed one run in 17 innings, struck out 19 and given up nine hits.

Rangers starter Yu Darvish (10-6) struggled against the Mariners.

Darvish's lack of control and a couple of grounders put the Mariners up 4-0 in the first inning.

Darvish came into Saturday averaging 9.3 walks per nine innings in his two outings this year against the Mariners.

Darvish walked Dustin Ackley to start Saturday's game, then hit Casper Wells with a 3-2 pitch after Ichiro Suzuki singled. A four-pitch walk to John Jaso followed, scoring Ackley.

Michael Saunders' hard grounder went off Michael Young's glove at first for an error. After Justin Smoak popped up, Kyle Seager singled in two more runs.

Darvish ended the 33-pitch inning by striking out Carlos Peguero and Brendan Ryan.

"You put those guys on the bags, and someone will find a way to get a base hit," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "The guys that were on the bags, other than Ichiro, were on for free. Those are the types of things Yu has to continue to work on."

Darvish allowed eight hits, seven earned runs, four walks and four strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings.

Hernandez took advantage of the early run support and cooled off the powerful Rangers' offense. Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz each struck out three times.

"He only needed one run," Ackley said. "It was nice to put those runs up and give him a little cushion. When he's relaxed out there, it's almost impossible."

Cruz's seventh-inning strikeout was the 10th of the game for Hernandez (7-5), the fourth time he has reached at least that mark this season and 20th time in his career.

"As good as I've seen him," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "I've said that a few times lately. Just shows you how special he was tonight. I thought maybe the best fastball we've seen him have this year."

Ackley's first solid contact of the game caromed off Darvish's left shin in the second, and the pitcher threw him out.

"I've got to take a look at it tomorrow and see where I am," Darvish said of his leg. "I really don't think it's going to affect me."

Ackley hit a line drive off the center field wall in the fourth inning to drive in Seager and give the Mariners a 5-0 lead.

Jaso's solo homer to left-center field in the fifth, his fourth this season, pushed Seattle in front 6-0.

Saunders' seventh-inning double to right field drove in Wells, who had singled. Darvish then walked Smoak, which ended his night.

The seven runs allowed were a career high for Darvish, and he has a 9.00 ERA in three starts against Seattle this year. Five of Darvish's six losses are on the road.

Notes: The Rangers recalled catcher Luis Martinez and option RHP Yoshinori Tateyama to Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday. Martinez provides insurance at catcher, since the Rangers are trying to rest Mike Napoli (thigh bruise) until Tuesday's series in Oakland. ... Hamilton is hitting .167 in his career against Hernandez. ... Seattle scored five-plus runs for just the 30th time this season.

Clinton urges Egypt's military to give way

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has met Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, head of Egypt's military council, to urge a smooth transition to full democratic rule.

The meeting came a day after crowds protested against her meeting with President Mohammed Morsi and the rising power of Islamists.

Tensions between Egypt's new civilian leader and its senior generals, who took interim power after the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak last year, have risen since Field Marshal Tantawi's council stripped Dr Morsi of some of his powers and granted itself legislative authority after the court-ordered disbanding of the parliament.

Egypt still has no constitution, a new government has yet to be named and the economy is struggling to recover from the uprising against Mubarak.

Since arriving in the country on Saturday, Mrs Clinton has avoided direct comment about the military's power grab. She repeatedly stressed that Egypt's future is for its citizens to decide, not the US.

''I have come to Cairo to reaffirm the strong support of the United States for the Egyptian people and their democratic transition,'' she said on Saturday.

''As you move forward, we will be there with support. Your choices will decide the future of this country.''

Security guards said an estimated 6000 people crowded the street in front of Mrs Clinton's hotel when she arrived in the capital of the Arab world's most populous nation. They set off fireworks, flashed laser lights and chanted as they waved Egyptian flags. One placard said, ''Go to hell, Hillary.'' Another said ''You like the Islamists, Hillary? Take them with you.''

Secularists and other groups have voiced concern that the priority of Islamists such as Dr Morsi, who comes from the ranks of the Brotherhood, is to advance their own agenda and dominate politics at the expense of the broader national interest. Many say they are worried that the US is lining up alongside the Brotherhood, which was the dominant group in parliament before the assembly was disbanded, and against the military.

Mrs Clinton said yesterday that the US would like to see the military return to a ''purely national security role''. She also spoke about the need for the Brotherhood and the generals to end their standoff by engaging in talks.

She called for ''an inclusive and transparent process to draft a new constitution that upholds universal rights and the rule of law, a constitution for all Egyptians''.

''It will take dialogue and compromise among all stakeholders and parties to achieve these goals and avoid confrontations that could derail progress towards democracy,'' Mrs Clinton said during an appearance with Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr.

Mrs Clinton spent the morning in Cairo yesterday meeting Christian leaders, Egyptian women and a business for technology entrepreneurs called Flat6Labs. Later she was to open a new US consulate in Alexandria, before continuing on to Israel.

During her meeting with Dr Morsi, she underscored the value of Egypt's peace treaty with Israel, saying that in the past 30 years Egyptians had lived free of conflict.

She also outlined millions of dollars in economic assistance the US will provide to Egypt, giving details of a $1 billion package announced last year by President Barack Obama.

Springsteen storms through London marathon

The organisers turned off the microphones in line with an agreed 10.30pm curfew while Springsteen and McCartney were still on stage.

LONDON, July 15 ? An epic Bruce Springsteen concert in London?s Hyde Park ended yesterday with organisers pulling the plug with the singer and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney still on stage and playing at full throttle after more than three hours of music.

Springsteen had danced and worked the crowd with the energy of a man of half his 62 years, running through most of his classics before being joined by McCartney to rip through the Beatles? ?I Saw Her Standing There? and ?Twist and Shout?.

The pair were still singing for 65,000 rained-soaked but rapturous fans when the organisers turned off the microphones in line with an agreed 10.30pm curfew.

The Hard Rock Calling festival was the New Jersey native?s 45th show in a 67-date tour of North America and Europe tied to ?Wrecking Ball?, a new album full of angry songs about corporate greed and the plight of ordinary working men and women.

Unlike on other dates, when he has introduced new songs such as ?Jack of All Trades? and ?Shackled and Drawn? with commentaries on the economic crisis, he avoided political polemics for the most part in a city that has been rocked by a new round of banking scandals in the past month. The focus was on having a giant street party.

Springsteen opened with ?Thunder Road?, standing alone at the microphone accompanied only by pianist Roy Bittan. It was, he noted, the first song he had played in his debut appearance in London at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1975.

He followed that with ?Badlands?, the crowd singing along word for word and its apt refrain of ?poor man wanna be rich, rich man wanna be king, and a king ain?t satisfied ?til he rules everything?. With ?City of Ruins?, he paid tribute to lost friends, notably Clarence Clemons, his longtime comrade in arms, saxophone player and stage foil, who died last year.

This was the E Street Band?s first tour since then but Clarence?s nephew Jake has stepped into his big shoes admirably.

A Beatle and the Boss

With a repertoire of the depth of Springsteen?s, the hits are not necessarily the highlights. The relatively obscure ?Johnny 99? became a rollicking romp with New Orleans style horns.

Several of the new songs are raucous Irish jigs with stinging lyics ? ?send the robber barons straight to hell, the greedy thieves who came around and ate the flesh of everything they found? he sang on ?Death to my Hometown?.

He also paid tribute to folk singer Woody Guthrie on the 100th anniversary of his birth, with ?The Ghost of Tom Joad?, a dustbowl ballad named for John Steinbeck?s hero. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine added searing guitar.

Another star guest, former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty joined him for ?Promised Land?. The crowd, standing ankle-deep in mud as the rain lashed down, sang along to ?Waitin? on a Sunny Day? then listened in hushed mood to a mournful ?The River?, his ballad of youth?s crushed dreams.

The show climaxed with ?Born in the USA? ? the title track of the 1984 album that catapulted him to superstardom, his anthem ?Born to Run?, and ?Dancing in the Dark? before McCartney walked on.

?I?ve waited 50 years for this,? Springsteen shouted.

Despite being a multi-millionaire, Springsteen has stuck to his image as champion of the underdog as well as master of ceremonies at the most exuberant of rock ?n? roll parties. He never fails to give value for money ? his show in Madrid on June 17 was the longest he has ever played, clocking in at three hours and 48 minutes. And he is still winning new fans.

?I?m a new convert,? said Anna, a 25-year-old nurse from High Wycombe, as the crowd streamed away. ?My dad was into him so I used to think he was uncool. I came with my dad tonight and now I see what all the fuss is about it.? ? Reuters

UN envoy presses Syrian peace plan with Iran, Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? The U.N.'s special envoy on the Syrian crisis sought to build support for his peace efforts Tuesday with the leaders of Iran and Iraq, saying President Bashar Assad has agreed to a plan to quell the bloodshed in the most violent areas of Syria and then expand the operation to the whole country.

Top diplomat Kofi Annan said at a news conference in Iran that the plan still must be presented to the Syrian opposition. But he said his talks with Assad a day earlier focused on a new approach to ending the violence, which activists say has killed more than 17,000 people since March 2011.

"(Assad) made a suggestion of building an approach from the ground up in some of the districts where we have extreme violence ? to try and contain the violence in those districts and, step by step, build up and end the violence across the country," Annan told reporters in Tehran, his first step on a tour of Syria's allies. He did not elaborate on the plan.

Annan later visited Iraq and met Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to discuss ways to end the fighting.

"I think we've all watched the tragic situation in Syria, the killings, the suffering of the people," Annan said in Baghdad. "And everyone I've spoken to shares the concerns and the needs for us to stop the killing."

The conflict in Syria has defied every international attempt to bring peace, and there was no sign that the plan Annan described Tuesday will be a breakthrough. Although the Assad government's crackdown has turned the Syrian president into an international pariah, he still has the support of strong allies such as Russia, Iran and China.

There is little support for military intervention of the type that helped bring down Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, and several rounds of sanctions and other attempts to isolate Assad have done little to stop the bloodshed.

Still, Annan's latest efforts to reach out to Syrian allies suggest he sees them as integral to solving the crisis.

Since Assad took power following the death of his father, Hafez, in 2000, he has deepened cultural, political and economic ties with Iran, making it Syria's strongest regional ally. Tehran, in turn, has boosted Assad's military, providing it with advanced communications technology and weapons.

All of this makes Iran unlikely to support change in Syria.

On Tuesday, Annan said Tehran has offered its support to end the conflict and must be "part of the solution."

"My presence here proves that I believe Iran can play a positive role and should therefore be a part of the solution in the Syrian crisis," Annan told reporters in Tehran after meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

Annan said he has "received encouragement and cooperation" from the Iranian government but did not elaborate. Salehi also did not spell out what Tehran was willing to do to help tame the violence.

Annan's gestures to Iran in particular appear to oppose the approach of Washington, which has rejected Iran's participation in helping solve the crisis.

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the U.S. doubts Iran will be able to play a constructive role.

"If the Iranian regime wants to stop giving direct material support to the Syrian killing machine ... we would welcome that. We're not at that point yet," he said Monday.

Some have said Annan's tour of Syria's allies smacked of betrayal.

Rajeh Khoury, a columnist in Lebanon's leading An-Nahar newspaper, wrote that Annan's actions "give the Syrian regime more time to accomplish the impossible task of crushing the uprising militarily."

"His insistence on making Iran part of the solution at a time the opposition sees Iran as part of the problem is extremely dangerous," Khoury said.

The conflict in Syria is complicated by sectarian tensions. Sunnis make up most of Syria's 22 million people, as well as the backbone of the opposition. But Assad and the ruling elite belong to the tiny Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Iraq's prime minister is a Shiite, and Iran is a Shiite powerhouse in the region.

The six-point peace plan Annan brokered earlier this year has failed to gain traction on the ground in Syria.

Government forces and rebels have widely disregarded a cease-fire that was to begin in April, and spreading violence has kept nearly 300 U.N. observers monitoring the truce stuck in their hotels in Syria.

Annan stressed the urgency of finding a solution to the crisis.

"If we don't make a real effort to resolve this issue peacefully and it were to get out of hand and spread in the region, it can lead to consequences that none of us could imagine," he said.

Salehi said Tehran backs the rights of the Syrian people but opposes military intervention. He also blamed the conflict's increasingly chaotic violence on the meddling of foreign powers.

"Unfortunately, the unwise interference of others has caused the situation in Syria to remain critical," he said. "The worsening of the situation should not happen. It would not benefit anyone in the region."

In other diplomatic efforts, an announcement posted on the Facebook page of the opposition Syrian National Council said a high-level delegation from the group, led by its head, Abdelbaset Sieda, was traveling to Moscow to discuss the situation in Syria with Russian officials. It gave no further details.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said one of its Syrian staff was shot and killed Tuesday while riding in a clearly marked ambulance in eastern Syria. It did not say who shot him.

The group said it was second time in a month that one of its workers had been killed and called on all sides to protect medics.

The Syrian conflict also has spilled outside the border several times. On Tuesday, the Lebanese army said shells were fired into Lebanon from Syria during an overnight exchange of fire along the countries' frontier.

The Red Cross and Lebanon's national news agency said a Lebanese and two Syrians died ? one from a heart attack and two others when their motorcycle hit a car in the Wadi Khaled area, where the clashes took place.

The Lebanese government decided at a Cabinet meeting Monday night to boost the army's presence along the volatile border, where shells fired from Syria have killed and wounded several Lebanese in the past few weeks.

Syria says the frontier is being used for smuggling weapons to rebels.

Also Tuesday, Jordan opened a new refugee camp near the border with Syria to handle the growing number of people fleeing the deadly violence.

The U.N. refugee agency had appealed to Jordan to accommodate the increased flow across the frontier, but the government in Amman has been reluctant to set up refugee camps, possibly to avoid angering Assad's regime.

The new camp in the northern border town of Ramtha had to be set up because Syrian refugees could no longer be absorbed into border communities, said Jordanian Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah.

Since the uprising began, Jordan has sheltered 140,000 Syrian refugees. Lebanon hosts about 30,000 Syrians and Turkey has taken in tens of thousands of others.
